JACK GEDALIUS, which u} was attended by many OL' HACKERS. Best wishes to JOEL GEDALIUS and the GEDALIUS family. We felt it didn't pay t v}o have a meeting with very few attendees. A good time was had by all who went to the party. The weather all over th w}e USA has been terrible. One storm after another causing untold millions in money damages and more importantly, x}untold misery, and many deaths. Lets hope we never see the likes of 1995 again. Snow, rain causing floods, tornadoe y}s etc. an amazing display of NATURES power! I know there are many non-game players out there, but I also z} know there are many game players, so having found what I think are excellent games, they are in this months disk, {} along with a number of utility type programs. This should satisfy all. While I'm at it, I should mention, tha |}t I look for all kinds of programs, some very old, some brand new, and taken from various sources, including old maga }}zines like COMPUTE, ANTIC, and ANALOG. I love to receive new programs conceived and programmed by our members, s ~}o send in your masterpieces. In this issue of OHAUGS newsletter, please check out "POKER.OBJ", a fa }ntasticly well done game with great graphics, and it keeps track of your money (gain?), (loss) from the last time } you played. Then there is "SMOKEY.BAS", (The challenge, is to get across America in less than 55 hours, and i }ts not easy, I can tell you, having tried a couple of times, without success) another great game you call by hit }ting the SPACE BAR on side 2. I came across GDEVICE. If you are an old timeer, you will surely remember it }from ANALOG. I suggest you get the copy (date will be found when you list the program) and read the three pages of } documentation. But, even without those docs, I have put in enough info to allow you to use the program, by the two } other GDEVICE programs on this disk. It does wonders for your printing efforts. In one of the future issues of } OHAUG's newsletter, I hope to add a couple more GDEVICE programs for you, if I can find them. OL' HACKERS }, always one of the 8 BIT clubs in the forefront of new 8 BIT stuff, is now the owner of a CD ROM disk with LOADS }of 8 BIT stuff in it. AL SHARKIS has kindly agreed to do the necessary conversion from the CD ROM to 8 BIT floppies }which will be put into our disk library. I am told that the CD ROM disk holds the equivelant of about 1150 doub }le sided floppies. I think we will have enough demo'es for a short while (grin). AL will use his font of knowledge of }his MSDOS, and 8 BIT micros, in order to do the conversion. Thanks AL, we know that this will take a lot of work on }your part, and we look forward to the results. Some nice member sent RON FETZER a personalized S.A.M. talking pro }gram which complimented OHAUG for the Bi- monthly newsletter, but RON misplaced (another word for lost) the senders } name. The library will notallow chat groups or access topornographic mateE}rial. Soundsreasonable. Jean also gives usmethods for safely thawing andcooking turkeys and rE}ecipesappropriate to Thanksgiving and thedays after, AND an original poemdesigned to motivate entries into theclubE}'s Creepshow Contest, AND anarticle on presenting demos (Ilearned about sentence length fromthe late Casey E}Stengel and the lateRobert Wagner, Jr. -- A.S.). ROBERTHAMILTON is the subject of thismonth's Getting to Know YoE}u column. JOE HICSWA writes about JACG in theWe Are Not Alone column. You mustread the column entitled, "A ShortE}Story" (author unknown. So, you see, the activity continues. New people are joining the community,old-timers are still aE}ctive or arere-activating, and the 8-bit's demiseis still far away.*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*re still aDr the OL' HACKERS AUG. A NEW WORLD! With the OHAUG's recent items on the Internet maybe my own experiences on it wI}ill encourage others, young and not so young to get involved. It opens a whole new world for you. MA BASIC SETUP MI}y setup is of the most basic. A 130XE standard, 1050 drive, mono monitor or TV. You will also need the followinI}g: An RS232 connection -an 810, MIO, or Blackbox etc. I use the DATATARI Rverter(SIO to RS232 cable> plugged I}into my 1050 serial socket. The 25 pin D-plug RS232 connects to your MODEM. I also use a US ROBOTICS modem set to 9600bI}ps BITS PER SECOND (aka as BAUD), my Terminal software is BOBTERM (from OHAUG PD LIBRARY) WHATS NEXT? Connect MODEI}M to power and to phone line, on BOBTERM screen type "AT", you should then see "OK" letting you know all is well. I} THE NET ******** You need a provider- Either AOL,GENIE,DELPHI.THE WELL etc and once sigI}ned up your software BOBTERM dials in to the net. WHAT YOU CAN ACCESS: E-MAIL Your own private electronic mailbox.I} FASTER THAN THE SPEED OF LIGHT and cheaper. TELNET A direct link in to a board.example: I log in to I}my provider CIX ,go internet, which brings up an IP>prompt. I tap in "TELNET WELL.COM" and I am on THE WELL in San FrI}ancisco. COST is, phonetime from my computer to CIX in LONDON, plus any charges the WELL makes. NOT CHARGED isI} PHONETIME LONDON/SANFRANCISCO. IRC- This one is INTERNATIONAL RELAY CHAT a sort of addictive CB radio thing GOPHERI} and ARCHIE- Ultra quick NET search tools. FTP FILE TRANSFER PROTOCOL A universal system to download from a distaI}nt computer.ONLY SNAG I HIT WAS TO DOWNLOAD .ZIP files, a sort of ARC file but thats mainly due to the memory limI}it of my computer. WWW The WorldWideWeb. Atari users can access Web pages if their provider has a web browser cI}alled LYNX it's text only so you can't get those naughty obscene porno pics so beloved by Senate/Congress! NOTI} THAT ANY OL'HACKER WOULD WANT TO? So my friends, that's the minimum you need. THE WELL is like my proI}vider CIX in London-a board with conferences.Internet and LYNX. -------------------------------------I}- Two Web sites of interest: ATARI 8BIT HOMEPAGE: http://pmwww.cs.vu.nl/home/ipoorten /Atari.8bit.Homepage/index.htI}ml Comprehensive set of docs on design of old hardware, vaporware stuff promised but never released Dutch arI}chive. -------------------------------------- FTP SITE: MIRROR OF ATARI 8BIT SOFTWARE: ftp://src.doc.ic.ac.uk/computingI} /systems/atari/umich/8bit Site has a considerable amount of interesting software -archivers, telecom progs,I}adv. games, programming languages etc. ************************************** My email address is: jcuI}EخM}Ȋ z z@AL!@E: DExHI B V` B VD@EB JK VM}ةXTUUA @TU]A @ TUeA @ TUsA @T UA @#o+M}0̭1̍͠SA̠̍TAP̢ L@8PשhL@il˩PL@SA̠TA̩ TUA M}@TUA @`WELCOME TO MIKE'S CASINODo you need Instructions?Say Yes! A big congratulations to JOEL GEDALIUS, on this auspiciou&}s occaision. The OHNL will continue without the usual second meeting's minutes (more room for games and st&}uff). The new March/ April newsletter will then be distributed and then mailed after the March meeting&}. ORRESPONDENCE: VALERIO CORAZZIN of Italy renewing his membership with lots of appreciation to the club&}. LARRY TISCHBEIN renewed and shared that he had a second knee replaced. (ouch). JACK GEDALIUS, who has had si&}milar problems, appreciated that he was not alone with these medical problems. JOYCE and NORMAN WILLIAMSON sent th&}eir greetings but no "greenings"...Secy RON is puzzled why they haven't sent in their dues yet. NOSAUG&} is going quarterly because of STUART MURRAY'S busy schedule -- he'll just double up discs per mailing. FUTU&}RA #17 is their biggest and best magazine yet. He shared his appreciation of SIMON WELLS wonderful trip across the big&} pond. It seems that no one has heard from him yet. We hope his transatlantic voyage met with no resistence. Pe&}rhaps he could not leave the lure of the states. STUART wished all 8-bitters his best wishes for the future. ALEX&} and he shared much about the goings on in the 8-bit world. ROBERT DE LETTER, Belgium, wrote a request to pay for h&}is membership with his charge card. ALEX responded wholeheartedly sending him a history of the OHAUG as well as &}his greetings and salutations, and requested that dues be paid in American dollars. (Ed. Since this meeting, ROBERT did&} send in his American dollar dues. A.P.) JIM CUTLER, lovingly known as "the ancient Brit", wrote to thank the club fo&}r making him an honorary member for 1996. As usual, JIM applauded the consistent quality of OHNL -- one could &}almost hear the smile in our editor in chief's voice. Further in his letter, JIM spoke of his experience &}with wordprocessors. Of all, he suggests SUPERSCRIPT (it has a choice of American and British SPELL CHECKERS -- 'c&}ause Brits speak a little differently, you know). JOE LIEBER inquired as to the date SUPERSCRIPT was released and a&}musingly realized that it had been out for a quite a few years already. DEMOS: The following disks are offere&}d according to number: #626 - NWPAC CHRISTMAS DISK: Happy music opened up the DALE WOOSTER OFFICERS ANNUAL CHRI&}STMAS DISK and the visuals were truly enjoyed. ALEX charted their adventure in this wonderfully interesting &} disk. RON shared that the programs on this disk, CALENDAR.BAS, had already been modified by OHAUG. ALEX demoe&}d GRASS- CALCULATOR, a working calculator written in BASIC which he felt was so good that he wanted to include it &} in the newsletter if all of it worked properly (which it didn't!). Other programs offered on S/1 are CALC.BAS, &}CAL.BAS, RECALL.BAS. S/2 has today's demo: GRASS CALC, CATERPIGGLE, MUNCHIE MADNESS (Bolderdash clone), BLIP (a tongu&}e-type, 2 player game with an attitude), LIVEWIRE 2 (from Analog)- a colorful and fast joystick or paddle game), 2 &} player PAC MAN (3 skill levels - CRAZY SCOOTER - race around the PAC MAN maze and avoid collision, ANDROTON - anot&}her PAC MAN-type game, and finally, FIREBUG, another a-maze- ing game with a twist. Hope all enjoy! ALEX &}and RON (that daring duo) demoed GRASCALC.BAS. While ALEX displayed regular math, RON lead the club in tryi&}ng to figure out how to convert (HEX) for machine language. As always, the club rose to the challenge. And a&}s ALEX shared, "Not being able to figure it out by themselves, they resorted to that cowardly act: reading th&}e docs!" ALEX then announced that they were going to run WHY,WHY.EXT and proceeded to read off some of the funny off&}erings of this delightful program. #627 - ABBUC Magazine #43 (Dec. '95): this program starts with Santa wishing&} all well with movie quality graphics. #628 -NWPAC DOM (Oct. '95) Printer Tricks: printer programs PIGLATIN, &}TALL.TXT, PRINT.TXT, LOADIT.BAS and PRNTHEAD.TXT--they demoed VERTICAL.BAS and to their delight found that the origi&}nal program had been authored by OHAUG's very own RON FETZER and modified by ALEX PIGNATO (small world, isn't it?)&}. Well now, RON and ALEX have a new claim to 8-bit fame as "programmers." S/2: original PRNTSTAR.BAS a&}nd PSINDXER.BAS with docs and VIEWDOCS.BAS. #629 - NWPAC DOM (NOV. '95): S/1 MENUMAKER Library Disk; S/2 PRINT S&}HOP ENVELOPE MAKER. #630 - NWPAC DOM (DEC. '95): S/1 Christmas Joy; S/2 PS (PRINT SHOP) Holiday Icons--as ALEX&} demoed S/1, the club enjoyed a chorus of Jingle Bells as Snoopy Santa and other holiday graphics bid farewell to an&}other OHAUG meeting. DOOR PRIZES: The club allowed ALAN SHARKIS a proxy vote because ALAN was enroute from th&}e LIAUG meeting in Smithtown; and, guess what, his number came up as the 1st winner! #2 = ALEX number came up next, &}but he passed to the next draw which was RON FETZER's number. #3 = HARRY TUTHILL (of course!) #4 = HAROLD PEGLER &} With lots of trading of "goodies", RON took ABBUC because he can read German, while HARRY was delighted with&} San Leandro's (SLCC) disk, and so the meeting ended. <=><=>ead German, while HARRY was delighted with$R
