We had our annual Valentine's DW}ay dinner at Lambrou's restaurant in Island Park, New York. It was a joyous occasion for all. Members and W}their wives attended, totaling eighteen. The dinner was delicious. Door prizes were awarded. STAN SCHENFELD anW}d his wife, JUDY, won two free meals. MRS. MARIA PIGNATO, wife of our late president, ALEX, again won a box of ValentW}ine's Day candy. We were honored by the presence of their two daughters, DIANNE and GAYLE. At the February meW}eting we went into the procedure of teaching our secretary, BARBARA KELLER, how to upload from the Atari tW}o the PC located at the home of Al Sharkis. This is so that she can send the transcription of the minutes of eaW}ch meeting to him so that he may be able to put it on our newsletter bi- monthly disk that much faster. To accoW}mplish this we used the SX212 modem which is a 1200 baud unit. We used the program SX Express for this upload. LaW}ter, we tried contacting NassauNet (a free, though limited internet service for Nassau County residents) using IW}CE-T which all proved to be successful. TOM ANDREWS sent us some surplus equipment and software from his home aW}nd from that of VERNON SMITH. Tom and Vernon were both active members of ACE of Syracuse before it folded. ANN RAWLIW}NSON, our former member from Cold Spring Harbor, brought in a big setup of Atari equipment for the club to sell. We had W}a very informative meeting. BY FOR NOW, JACK GEDALIUS o=o=o=o=o=. We had Ts o=o=o=o=o= Editor's Message by Alan Sharkis I put this issue together in a hurry. Y[}ou will see the evidence of that here and there throughout the newsletter. Life has been a little rough aro[}und here lately, but should smooth out soon. In addition, we had only two weeks from the February meeting to the [} March meeting, at which the newsletter will be mailed out. As I write this, I am missing one file -- the minu[}tes of the February meeting! If it doesn't appear and another article is substituted, it is because I di[}dn't get it in time. However, as you will see in Jack's message, we spent time at the last meeting teaching Barbara Ke[}ller how to upload the minutes to my PC. So, if the minutes do appear, you will know that they were transmitte[}d to me via modem instead of snail-mail. We're moving into the modern age, folks! Hold on to your hats. The prog[}ram that runs from the spacebar on Side 1 this issue is a Simon clone called BLINKY. It's more difficult than [} Simon, however, because you use the number keys at the top of your keyboard instead of hitting large buttons t[}hat are in close proximity to the lights. AND, Blinky has seven lights to watch and listen to, not just four! As [}you will note, the BASIC file is only two sectors long. I could call that an April Fool joke, but it isn't. Bli[}nky is a classic example of a machine-language program that uses a BASIC loader. If you run it from the spacebar, y[}ou will notice that the colors are incorrect, making the game's objects hard to see. When you get to the ga[}me screen, press . That will restore the black background, but the game will remain in memory, ready to play.[} If you copy the program to another disk, the colors should be normal without the need to press . But if you [}do that, be sure to copy both BLINKEY.TXT and BLINKEY.OBJ. This program came from the July-August 1996[} issue of the TWAUG Newsletter. Also on Side 1 is the very popular adventure game, DUNE. I've put it here in [}Discomm form (DUNE.DCM) because it was important to maintain the special DOS with which it came. I've also put the [} DISCOMM program (DISCOMM.COM) on Side 1 so that you can easily convert DUNE.DCM to a complete disk. You'll need [} a blank disk for the process, of course. Unlike the library disk, the DUNE disk will be single-density. Afte[}r the Discomm process is complete, you will find three text files on the disk; DUNE.DOC, DUNE.VCB and DUNE.[}CHT. Print all three out, and read DUNE.DOC and DUNE.VCB before playing the game. It would even be a good idea to [}have them present while you play. If your frustration tolerance is low, you might want to sneak a peek at DUNE.[}CHT, too. DUNE comes to us via Pool Disk Too, from a club called BRE -- thier disk number 098. Please note that th[}ere are three informative articles on Side 1, in addition to the usual ones (minutes, messages.) One, by JOE[} HICSWA (choice B on the menu,) provides hints and undocumented commands for XLENT Word Processor. The se[}cond (choice I on the menu,) by yours truly, acknowledges a potential problem you might have had with the last newslett[}er disk and suggests how this will be remedied starting with this issue. The third (choice J on the menu,) also by[} me, is some late-breaking news that Atarians, particularly those who spent hours calling BBSs as I did, will fi[}nd very exciting. Also please note that there are several changes and additions in the e-mail list. All[} changes and additions in the e-mail list are marked with asterisks. On Side 2, the program that runs from the spaceba[}r is QT.BAS, from ANTIC Magazine of January, 1985. I had an interesting time typing in that program when it firs[}t came out. That process helped push me toward a disk subscription! But now, here's the April Fool joke. I'm not gi[}ving any instructions for this game. You have to figure out (or remember) what the little bird is supposed to do wit[}h the blocks of ice, and you have a time limit to beat! Also on Side 2 look for TRIVIA.BAS, a fast-paced trivi[}a quiz with six categories to choose from, TRIAD.COM, a classic shoot-'em-up, and RAILKING.COM, a very involved [} but interesting, one-to-four player, railroad-building simulation game, maybe the predecessor of the popular Ra[}ilroad Tycoon series for the ST and PC. The file, RAILROAD.TXT is also on this side, and I suggest that you copy it an[}d RAILKING.COM to another disk with DOS files on it. You can use the DOS opy command to copy RAILKING.TXT to yo[}ur printer and read about the game before you play it. Since this is a game that must be saved (I doubt that [}it can be finished in one night) you would do well to have it on its own disk, along with DOS files and the t[}ext file. I hope you enjoy this issue. o=o=o=o=o= on its own disk, along with DOS files and the tXF o=o=o=o=o= MINUTES OF OHAUG MEETING 2/20/99 PRESIDENT JACK GEDALIUS opened the meeting. He informe_}d fellow members of what a nice annual dinner we attended on Valentine weekend, Friday, February 12, 1_}999 at Lambrou's Restaurant again this year. The meeting was interrupted by a former member, ANN RA_}WLINSON, bringing Atari merchandise she wants to sell and leaving it with the club to advertise and store. The Club will_} prepare an inventory list of the items available and include it in a future Newsletter. TREASURY REPORT: We are_} in the black. HAROLD PEGLER is still working on the Library catalog. ALAN SHARKIS read a letter from George Gab_}le who decided to resign from membership. ALAN then informed members of a letter he received from his Internet Servic_}e Provider which anyone who is running a PC might be interested in. It informs us about a couple of potential problem_}s. One is a Worm called "The Happy 99 Worm" which doesn't cause any problems in your computer, but winds up bei_}ng attached to any piece of e-mail you send out from that time on. But there is another one called "Back Orif_}ice" which allows someone else to back in and take control of your computer. They can hack into another computer wi_}th your computer and you take the blame. They can also do all kinds of mischief to your computer. The letter is availa_}ble for members to read. DEMONSTRATIONS: ALAN SHARKIS showed the Secretary, Barbara Keller how to get on line and_} also how to contact ALAN's PC and upload the Minutes directly to his PC. He will also demo how to use the Atari f_}or Internet on line. He went through the whole process of hooking it up inserting an ICE-T software program DOS d_}isk. ALAN then went through the process with the SX Express Communi- cations Program and how to use it to upload_} data directly into his computer. We then successfully uploaded a sample from the Newsletter to Alan's comput_}er at home from the library. We went through the procedures 3 times in all for practice, and each time checked _}that the file was really there. The next demo ALAN SHARKIS did showing the members how to use the ICE-T Disk to_} send a sample email message to RON FETZER (looking up RON's email address on ALAN's address list) and read e-m_}ail messages and view news groups in ALAN's e-mail. We also were able to get in Hotmail web site on the Nassau Librar_}y System and bring up BARBARA's email address and check her inbox. After we finished the demo's JACK GEDALIUS show_}ed us his video's of last year's annual dinner and this year, February 12, 1999, annual dinner at Lambrou's_} Restaurant. Everyone enjoyed watching the video. There were no door prizes at this meeting, but when the meeting _}started there were many items for sale on the table. They came from our upstate member, TOM ANDREWS and from his_} friend and former ACE of Syracuse member, VERNON SMITH.
