After many months of soul- searching, I have decided that I will stop actively p}articipating in the Atari community in December, 1999, at which time I will dispose of all of my Atari equipment, docum}entation and software, except for the emulators that run on my PC and the disk images to use with them. It has been a }very heart-wrenching decision to make. I am faced with the folowing realities: 1. I am about to embark} upon a venture that will use up considerable time and room -- room that my Atari } equipment now occupies. I am planning to do private consultation in the area of adaptive te}chnology. Hope- fully, I will be able to specialize in serving those who have both development}al and physical disabilities. 2. In the past few months, I have only used my Atari sy}stem to produce this newsletter. This is a reflection of how much my PC has taken ove}r. You might ask several questions at this time. You might wonder, for example, why I'm making this ann}ouncement now, some nine months in advance of my leaving the community. It does seem odd, at first glance. But I hav}e obligations to this user group and my other group. I'm newsletter editor here, and secretary of LIAUG. It wo}n't be a major problem for LIAUG -- the secretary has only simple, routine things to do there. But for the Ol' H}ackers, my leaving will create a major slot to fill. I want to give the membership time to see if somebody wi}ll volunteer to take my position as newsletter editor. If somebody comes forward, I want to train them in the mech}anics of producing our newsletter. If nobody comes forward, I will suggest that it's time for the user group t}o change to an Internet- based method of getting the equivalent of a newsletter to our members. I'd want } to be in on the planning of such a change, even though I probably won't use it much. Another question you might }ask is why I can't keep some small portion of my Atari equipment should I get nostalgic for it at a future dat}e? Related to that question is the one about what will happen to my equipment and disks when I leave the comm}unity? Happily, both can be answered at the same time. My son, who is getting married in August, has expressed a} desire to have one of my Atari 8-bit computers, if only to play games. To the extent that his new home and his }bride-to-be will allow, he will have some or all of what I've amassed over the years. I have a suspicion that I'll b} o=o=o=o=o= Problems With The Newsletter Disk By Alan Sharkis TOM ANDRE}WS is a gem. So are JACK GEDALIUS, RON FETZER, HAROLD PEGLER and a whole host of guys who helped discover a pro}blem with the newsletter program and then fixed it. Last issue, I described a problem in the disk reader. }The problem had never been brought to my attention before. It seemed that on some machines, but not others, th}e screen would flash as text files were loading and stray characters would appear -- either in the bottom margi}n of the screen or a little higher. If they appeared higher, they would obliterate all that nice stuff that Tom }Andrews added to tell you how to advance the screen or quit reading a file. It was mysterious, because the problem didn}'t show up until the January-February issue. At our dinner in Febrary, Jack Gedalius told me that there was a p}roblem, the one I described above, with his newsletter disk. Later, I learned that HARRY TUTHILL also h}ad the problem. I mailed replacements to both of them. I alerted all the members, via the March-April issue of} the newsletter, that I was going to mark disks that I duplicated with a purple dot to help trace where the proble}m was coming from. As it turned out, that purple dot wouldn't have done me any good -- the problem was not caus}ed by anything in the duplication process. So, ignorant of what was happening, I sent the March-April Master to Ron.} He and I each made our thirty copies with our expanded 130XEs, checked them all, and found no problems. I had a }conflict between the Ol' Hackers meeting and a LIAUG meeting on March 1st. ALLEN ATKINS, another gem, volunteered to} take my copies to the meeting so that they could be mailed out before the business part of the meeting (our usual p}rocedure.) I went to LIAUG, ate lunch, and came back to the Ol' Hackers. When I walked in, there were many gl}um faces. It seemed that the replacement disks I mailed to Harry and Jack had the screen reader prob}lem. It was beginning to sound like a PC virus, although it was far from being as harmful as those usually are.} The assembled masses decided, for what reason I never found out, to run the March-April newsletter disk on } the machine we usually bring to meetings -- an expanded 800XL. The problem, which didn't appear on any of th}e copies that Ron and I checked at home, was now appearing on every copy of the March-April disk. They were waitin}g for me to arrive and tell them what I thought. Several of the guys offered up theories. JOHN HARDIE said somet}hing about a 130XE running ANTIC in extended mode. It didn't seem to make sense at the time. Harold Pegler confes}sed that he seldom read the newsletters from the screen. He preferred to print them out. He mentioned that )} o=o=o=o=o= B U G S ! by Thomas J. Andrews That's right, bugs! %P} Right here on the OHAUG disk! The new software had a bug. I admit it, it's all my fault. The only reason it%Q} took so long to find was that it didn't show up until the second newsletter disk it was used upon. Some of you won't%R} have any idea what I'm talking about, because the bug only showed up on XLs, and not all of THEM. But it was there %S}all right, and not easy to track down. The fix was deceptively simple, and you'll find it on this, and on all %T}future versions of the newsletter. For the story behind the bug, read on... The new software worked perfectly on the %U}first disk, Nov/Dec 1998. Then came the second disk, Jan/Feb 1999, and two people reported problems with the screen %V}reader. The screen would flash while the text was scrolling, and the prompts on the bottom of the screen showed only g%W}arbage. At first it was thought to be a copying glitch, and the offending disks were replaced. But, the rep%X}lacements didn't work, either! Other reports came in from people with non-working disks, all people with XLs, mostl%Y}y those made in Hong Kong. My own 130XE, the computer used to program the software, showed nothing wrong, and, %Z}thinking the problem was still a copying glitch, Alan blamed faulty equipment and didn't let me know about it. I%[}n an effort to track down the bad hardware, Alan put an article on the Mar/Apr disk asking people to notify him of %\}problems, and the disks were marked according to which equipment was used to produce them. This alerted me to %]}the problem, and I started emailing Alan about it. We zeroed in on part of the problem almost simultaneously, %^} determining that it only occurred when using Revision B BASIC, the built-in BASIC of most XLs. Revision B, you m%_}ay remember, is the long-known buggy version of BASIC which everybody was warned to replace. Its biggest %`}fault was supposed to be that it would add 16 useless bytes to a program every time it was saved, making the prog%a}ram expand beyond available memory if enough revisions were made. There were other bugs, too--but this was the%b} worst. None of us had ever seen a problem like this before, and we began to think we had discovered an entirely NE%c}W bug in Rev. B. We were wrong, and so were those who identified the "worst" bug, but more on that later. I %d}meant to leave it alone, putting it off to a "Rev. B problem" that I probably couldn't fix. But I couldn't %e}do it. It kept nagging at me, a puzzle that I ought to be able to solve. So, I looked further, thought some, look%f}ed again, and found an answer. The screen text display uses a custom Display List to get the text to scroll while%g} the header and prompts stay still. One of the limitations of a Display List is that it can't cross a 1K boundary in RAM. This is because %r}of the structure of the ANTIC chip, which uses the Display List as a program. If the Display List DOES cross that%s} boundary, ANTIC gets lost, and strange things begin to happen to the display. I was aware of this limitation, %t}but all through the programming the display showed none of the symptoms that I would associate with it, so I tho%u}ught I had safely avoided it. The truth was, I was within the boundary, with my XE and Rev. C BASIC. My Display Li%v}st started at location 15313, and was 38 bytes long. The 15K boundary is at 15360, dangerously close, but within l%w}imits. Blissfully unaware of the danger, Alan and I went ahead with the program as it was. After all, it%x} worked perfectly on our XEs, didn't it? Little did we know that the misunderstood Rev. B bug would come up and%y} byte us on our collective posteriors. You see, Rev. B doesn't add those 16 useless bytes when the program is S%z}AVED, it does it when the program is LOADED. In the newsletter program, this had the effect of moving the location %{} of the Display List to 15329. Add 38 bytes, and you cross that 15K boundary, and all He** breaks loose. Rev%|}. A and Rev. C don't add those 16 bytes, so they continued to work. So why did it work on the Nov/Dec disk? Ah, tha%}}t was a knotty problem, and I still don't have it fully solved, at least as far back as the original cause. On%~} that disk, DOS.SYS was configured differently, taking up around 150 more bytes of RAM than normal. I still %}haven't learned what was different about that particular DOS, but the result was to push the position of the Display List%} for that disk up to a safe area. The fix, like most, is simple once you understand the problem. All we needed to %} do was DIM a dummy string variable before the Display List string, making it big enough to put the list safely pa%}st that bothersome boundary. If you care to look, you'll find that variable in line 1010. If you want to, y%}ou can fix the problem disks the same way. Just boot the disk (use a Rev. A or Rev. C cartridge if you have an X%}L, PLEASE!), then use option 1 from the Main Menu to go to BASIC. LIST line 1010, and between the word DIM and DL$ %} insert "DUMMY$(100)," (Without the quotes), and press RETURN. Then, SAVE the edited program as NEWSLTR.BAS.%} As far as I know, this should fix things. If there are any more problems, please let either me or Alan know, so %}we can work on them. He is running this new version of PRO in EMULATION on )}a PC. So, now you can telnet to Closer To Home BBS and if you do this with your PC and if you're running a program )}with Windows 98 called Hyperterminal it will give you the emulation you need, beautiful. TOM is developing a PROXY pr)}ogram so that PC's can act as proxy servers for the Atari and we can then use the Atari to telnet or use the Web. DEMONSTRATIONS: ALAN SHARKIS demoed the Newsletter disk. Then he demoed a)} TWAUG disk (library #725)from England, side 1 briefly because he has already demoed them. ALAN informed fellow members that he plans to leave the ATARI Club in December 1999. He has decE}ided to devote his time to private consultation to help people who have various disabilities through adaptiveE} devices. He will no longer have the time available to devote to his work in the ATARI Club. Alan will probably give E}some of his equipment to his son if he wants it. The rest he will donate freely to OHAUG and/or LIAUG if they wanE}t it. ALAN then read an article from XIO3 Newsletter from Garden City ATARI Computer Enthusiasts a column called 8E}-bit Affairs written by Roland Grant to show how mistakes can happen. He then read thru & informed fellow meE}mbers what is true & what is not true about this article. He may write to ROWLAND GRANT, the author of the article, to cE}orrect the errors. He then went on the explain some of the new equipment and technology he is interested in working E}with. ALAN then went on to say he will be able to use an EMULATION program for many of the ATARI programs after he E}removes the ATARI equipment from his home. He asked JACK GEDALIUS if that still qualified him to be a member, and JacE}k said it did. Alan needs a lot of space for this new venture. While it is true that he will be exploring Linux E}on his PC, that will take up a minimum of time and no additional room. TREASURER REPORT: RON FETZER announced thatE} we are in the black. ALAN SHARKIS again reiterated that he will be happy to help whoever wants to take over as E}the editor of the newsletter. ALAN then said he received a postcard from JOE HICSWA saying that he received E}a damaged Newsletter disk & returned it for replacement. ALAN says there were several similar messages on hiE}s email. Members feel that the fault lies with the Postal Service. It was suggested that perhaps the disk shoulE}d be mailed with more protection. The local members decided they will just send another copy when aE} complaint comes in, rather than increase the cost per issue to further protect the disks. DEMONSTRATIONS: RON E}FETZER demoed the 130XE Makro Assembler from TORSTEN KARWOTH in Germany, for which Ron translated the documentatioE}n. Menu items A-E in the main menu of the package are easy to understand because they are in English. RON trE}ied F & did a configuration which you must do before using the program. The English translation E}of the documentaion consists of 11 files, and prints out to 41 pages!
