I just didn't get many articles to do this time. IU} could, of course, fill in, or "tap dance", but it's the start of the school year and tasks other than computeU}r interests are piling up, so bear with me. The March, 1992 issue of (FR)ANTIC contains a review by BILLYU} D. WASHBURN of one of my favorite programs, Atari Planetarium. MANUEL GARCIA provides an addendum that is useful U} in the San Antonio area. It gives latitudes and longitudes correct to the nearest second for various referU}ence points in that town. Perhaps some ambitious soul (not me, thanks) could compile such a list for our Long IslanU}d area? LARRY ALLEN continues his SpartaDos X Tips column (part 3) with a discussion of the COPY and TYPE commands. MU}ATTHEW D] BAKER presents part 3 of his Atari Art column. He concentrates on Rambrandt and Diamond Paint. ALVAN U}SHERRILL discusses speed and memory with regard to word-processors and the human interface. I have to agree with hisU} philosophy. See if you do. Finally, ED. HALL publishes annotated answers to his previously printed Trivia Quiz. U}I picked up some very interesting computer history, although I must admit that I learned more from this answer keU}y than I was able to recall when I took the quiz. The March, 1992 Between Bytes (JACS) contains the U}fourth installment of ROBERT ELY's SpartaDos column. He stresses SDX syntax and gives examples of several variations U}of the BASIC, BOOT and CAR commands. He distinguishes between "CAR" and "CAR:". I wonder how many of us can do that?U} He also goes over the MD (or CREDIR, or MKDIR) commands. In another column, Robert describes Color Dump, a pU}rogram he wrote to enable 24-pin dot-matrix printers to print graphics 9 pictures in color. He plans another versU}ion for 9-pin printers with single-color ribbons, stating that it would work in a similar manner, but would reV}quire more attention from the user. UPDATE ATARI (HACE) for March, 1992 has an interesting GEORGE IKEN article about sV}ending formfeed commands to a printer from either the 8-bit or the ST. It all started out with a one- line progV}ram of BASIC code that got compiled to a rather large binary file. George was not satisfied and played with theV} idea a bit longer. What he came up with is, ..well, I won't spoil the suspense ... In the MUG Newsletter of MaV}rch, 1992 please look for an article by KEN WICKERT (ACE of Syracuse) and its associated sidebar by VERNON W. SMITH ofV} NAPCO. Puget Sound Atari News has resurfaced! This magazine, a collaborative effort of several userV} groups in the Pacific Northwest promised to return, and it has, slicker and better than ever. DON LUCIA V}(A.U.G.I.E.) presents a model constitution and bylaws document that any club can use or modifiy to their own requiremeV}nts. JASON HEDRICK (with special thanks to BOB WOOLEY, BOB PUFF and PAUL SMITH) presents a hardware mod for thV }e 1200XL that brings the machine in line with the rest of the XL/XE series and more. In the MUG Newsletter foV }r April, 1992, NAPCO presents a reprint of a THOMAS J. ANDREWS (ACE of Syracuse, OHAUG) article on bubble sorts. HeV } also reviews an 8-bit game, Rail King. KEN WICKERT (ACE of Syracuse) discusses the idiosyncratic behavior of GEnV }ie with regard to half and full-duplex logons and suggests ways around it. Finally, the JIMMY BOYCE (CACE) AtarV }iwriter+ article on loading, saving and appending files is reprinted. JACG Newsletter for April, 1992 contaiV}ns two good potpourri-type articles: one by JOSEPH E. HICKSWA and the other by SAM COREY. Sam's article mentioV}ns ALEX and the late KRIS HOLTEGAARD among other people. *+*+*+*+*+*+END+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+* article mentioTo ()()()()()()()()()() WHY OL' HACKERS ?????? by HARRY TUTHILL HIGHLIGHTS OF OL' HACKERS USER GROZ}UP A -A tari 8 bit computer exclusive support. WRIGHT joined our club. He lives in Henx}rnando, MS. Welcome to the club. I think you will find it most worthwhile. You join us along with many other non-locany}l members. CORRESPONDENCE: CURRENT NOTES mentioned our newsletter favorably in the last issue. Anz}LEX read his welcomeing message to RON which ALEX had left on GENIE (G.E. modem BBS). We now have the following mn{}embers on GENIE, who can be reached using the following names and numbers where indicated, A.SHARKIS1, A.PIGNATO,n|} B.POEHLAND, C.COLE1, J.ANDREWS24 and R.FETZER. These are our GENIE mail addresses. If you want to send us a mn}}essage please use these names. BEN POEHLAND our member from PA. sent ALEX a message via GENIE. In it he tells us n~}the latest news of ATARI CLASSIC magazine. He hopes to have the first issue ready for the WAACE ATARI FEST in VA. BENn} said that it is a miracle that AC was completed from the time it was started AUGUST 5, 1992 to the deadline of SEPTEn}MBER 19, 1992. BEN did an amazing feat by doing this in such a short time. He got a staff together, reviewedn} articles, composed the pages, answered a million questions, solicited ads. and did a thousand other n} things in 6 weeks. This in itself is an unbelievable accomplishment. DR. ROLLY HERMAN of the WESTCHESTEn}R ATARI CLUB is the Advertising Manager. Without trying very hard the first issue will have 30% of it pages devotn}ed to ads. This showes you there is a support base for the 8-Bit computer. DR. ROLLY HERMAN will try to contact evn}ery 8- Bit developer and retailer. ALAN SHARKIS is on the staff of AC as a reviewer. ALEX is on the staff n}as the DISK MANAGER. ALAN SHARKIS wrote an article for AC which will appear in the premiere issue. The publisher n} left out the next to the last sentence which is the punch line. BEN most likely will put an editors note in the nexn}t issue. (FLASH ITEM ADDED BY EDITOR) ALEX got another message from BEN stating that about 310 ATARI CLASSn}IC magazines were distributed at the WAACE fest. There are still some 1st issue magazines available if you send in your n}name. ITEMS: HAROLD PEGLER gave us a hint on the use of DISKCOM3.COM (DCM). This is a BOB PUFF program that tn}akes a disk and makes one file out of it. You should first take your source disk and copy each file to a cleann} disk. In this way you avoid the diskcom'ing of erased programs. A great hint HAROLD. The SAN LEANDRO COn}MPUTER CLUB took the RECTANGLE program from our newsletter and used it in their newsletter. The W.A.N.D nn}ewsletter of the Westchester Atari Club reprinted the article on COMPUTER VIRUS. ALEX brought up the point thatn} he is overworked with writing the newsletter, making all labels, preparing demoes and answering all the man}il. He asked for a volunteer to take over the mail. The discussion was tabled until the next meeting. We need a corn}responding secretary to handle the mail. Any volunteers, step forward. CORRESPONDENCE: BEN writes us that RON Fn}ETZER submitted an article which will appear in a later issue. A letter was sent to TOM ANDREWS our member frn}om upstate NY. ALEX sent him a replacemnt newsletter disk. ALEX explained that at last he learned how to sendn} a message on GENIE. A letter from WAACE informing us about the upcomming Atari Fest. (Will be over by the time n}you read this.) JIM CUTLER our member from England sent us a CHRISTMAS CARD. Thanks JIM! A letter frn}om CHARLES COLE our member from Arizona. He sent us a list of his personal library and a super data base prn}ogram called DISKBASE.COM by Todd Bake. He tells us that he sent a review to CURRENT NOTES magazine, plus he has n}3 more articles in the pipe line at CN that have not been published as yet. He tells us that he will send us any PD n}program from his library that we want. That is a very generous offer CHARLES, and the OL' HACKERS thank you. n} ALEX answered that he had recognized CHARLES name from articles printed in CN. ALEX said we are thrilled n}at having him as a member. ALEX told him that he can be reached on GENIE too, but he is not yet too familiar with tn}h ins and outs of GENIE. A letter from BILL MIMS. He is in the Air Force in Dekota where he runs a BBS. We sent n}him the PROGRAMMING KIT and the JUL/AUG newsletter. A letter from JIM CUTLER our member from England. He san}id he is now using BOB TERM and he downloaded the newsrelease about the AC magazine to the CITY BBS in ENGLAND. He alson} tells us that he got a new kitchen with new appliances. He said the newsletter was superb, as usual. Thanksn} JIM, glad that you like our efforts. A letter from TOM ANDREWS our member from upstate NY. He writes his disn}k newsletter got mangled by the post office. We sent him a new copy. He writes us that our sample newsletter n} on GENIE is doing quite well, and is being downloaded by about 20 8 BIT'ers.. A letter to DANE STEGMAN on}ur member from Akron N.Y. He is the secretary of an ST Club in BRAD, the BUFFALO REGION ATARI CLUB, however, he in}s however a devoted 8-Bitter. JOE HICSWA our member from Passaic NJ writes us and sent us membership duen}s. JOE is also the 8- Bit V.P. of JACG. He writes that he has enjoyed our newsletter, and looks forward to, receiving tn}hem. DEMOES: JACK GEDALIUS demoed HOME FILE MANAGER. JACK records all his stocks, bonds, air conditioning n} business records etc. with this program. He also has all his collection of ANTIC magazines on it. His son keepn}s records of dinosaurs on his copy. The program simulates a file of index cards. You can keep several files on the dn}isk. It has a great search function. It automatically sorts your file. It is all menu driven and very user frn}iendly and intuative to work. You can tag a card. It puts a paper clip on the card. You can un-erase an entry. Thn}e program is great and very easy to work. It is especially suited for students because it is so easy to use. A great demo!n} We saw a demo program of MARK BENSLEY commercial programs. Very well done. ALEX showed a programn} that creates two RAMDISKS with a modified 256K 800XL or 130XE 256K computer. It is a modified 2.5 DOS. You cann} configure the DOS to any of the two RAMDISK drives that you want such as D3; D4; D8 etc. D3 must be formatted and hasn} no DOS or DUP. D8 is the usual setup. With a 256K upgrade the D8 RAMDISK will be 90K and the 2nd RAMDISK will n}be 90K and can be assigned any number from D2 - D7. It will survive a RESET and the data is not lost. Thus you cn}an copy 2 full disks into the RAMDISKS because each disk is only 88K. JOE DANKO of SPACE wrote this program. The programn} will go into the library. A hint form our SYSOP JIM HARRIS. In DOS 2.5 if you have a machine language progran}m that you want to self boot you can call it AUTORUN.SYS. If you have a 2nd machine language progn}ram to self boot call it RAMDISK.COM . DOS 2.5 looks for RAMDISK.COM first and then it looks for AUTORUN.SYS. n} A most addictive game was shown by ALEX called MYJONG. If you get it you will do nothing else except play this game. Sn}o DON'T GET IT unless you are prepared for the consequences! ADDICTION! We saw a PSF CONVERTER that lets you mn}anipulate PS Icons. On the other side of this disk is G- PRINT and CPALATTE both of these programs are terrific and n}you should have them. G- PRINT is a printing program that lets you print with various fonts and in columns, and will n} print inverse characters. ALEX demonstrated SAM the voice simulator on a program. SAM can read anything. It in}s an old program but a good one. Even IBM does not have a SAM yet. We heard the soliloquy from Hamlet and the Gettysben}rg Address. It is still a unique program that has not been ported to any other computer system, as far as we know!
