He then distributed a change of email address for Patrick Mulvey: pm4}ulvey@clarityconnect.com. ALAN SHARKIS then dicussed the need to create .ATR files very soon. He then showed the mem4}bers a page set up with fonts which appear the same as Atari screen fonts. TREASURY REPORT We are in the black. Also4}, we have a new member from India named B. Kesavan from Bombay, India, who requested some disks. Harold 4} is working on the library list and hopes it will be completed very shortly. A visitor named Steve was at the mee4}ting. He is interested in joining. DEMONSTRATIONS: RON FETZER demoed an ABBUC disk Sonda Magazine #25 (Spe4}cial Edition) Herbert II one game with music. On October 30 in Germany they are having a party. ALAN SHARKIS d4}emoed the Newsletter. JOE LEBER mentioned that the newsletter's welcome screen contains the words,"strictly 4}8bit." ALAN showed a demo written in listable Atari BASIC from ATREJU's website with colorful movement and music4}. The visitor, Steve, was very interested in what he saw and asked some questions. He then inquired how to j4}oin the club. ALAN went on to say that the Atari has been going on for 20 years now. The Newsletter contains 4} a list of URL's that are Atari 8-bit-oriented. He also mentioned some articles written by Joe Hicswa and s4}ome other articles that are in the Newsletter. He showed two games from 1982. Then we went to side 2 of the New4}sletter and ALAN read a list of tasks you can accomplish using the BUSNES.BAS program. The next meeting wil4}l be October 30 at the Plainview-Old Bethpage Library. There were no door prizes but ALAN SHARKIS brought 4}in equipment and literature instead for the members to take freely. o=o=o=o=o=4e o=o=o=o=o= 00011110, 1E, Etc. No, this isn't an article on machine- language programming, nor i8}s it an article on binary and hexadecimal notation. The savvy among you would have figured out by now that bot9}h expressions in the title are equivalent to the decimal numeral "30." The Thirty Column is the tradi9}tional way for a newspaperman to say goodbye to his readers and colleagues, and I guess this is mine. 'Thir9}ties' usually contain some mention of the difficulty that the writer had in producing them. Goodbyes are9} never easy. This isn't the most difficult piece of writing I've ever done, but it comes close. I've enjoyed being th9}e editor of the Ol' Hackers Newsletter for the three- and-one-half years that I've done it, and it will be hard to shut t9}hat part of my life down, but I know I'm leaving the newsletter in VERY capable hands. RON FETZER is going9} to edit the next issue of the newsletter, and it will then be passed, in turn, to JACK GEDALIUS, HAROLD9} PEGLER AND HARRY TUTHILL. Each of them has more experience in the Atari 8-bit world than I, so I know the con9}tent will be rich -- perhaps richer than what I was able to muster. Some of them have no PCs (which I still consid9 }er to be the ultimate 8-bit support peripheral.) Those who do have PCs don't have SIO2PC cables, but the clu9 }b will receive mine in December and, hopefully, the guys will learn how to use it before that. Just so that no9 }ne of the rest of you line up to become editors without knowing the facts , let me fill you in on what I faced, but 9 } was luckily able to overcome. Ron, Jack, Harold and Harry are pretty aware of it already. There were deadline9 }s to be met. Sure, we could have found time to mail a newsletter from someone's home instead of getting it out 9}before a meeting, but I decided to put pressure on myself in the tradition set by ALEX PIGNATO. It sometimes9} came close to making a wreck of my family life. The key words here are, "came close." I guess the lesson here 9}is to learn to put things in perspective. We are hobbyists, I hope, and not obsessives. We can enjoy our ho9}bbies more and be more productive with them if we let them just be hobbies. There were times when submissions of art9}icles were few and far between, and I wound up writing many of them. But most of the time you guys came through fo9}r me like champs. There are so many people out there to thank for what they sent in. (If I don't mention your nam9}e in the next sentence, it isn't because I've forgotten you or taken your work for granted.) Thanks especial9}ly to RON FETZER, TOM ANDREWS, FRANK WALTERS and JOE HICSWA for your contributions to this newsletter. Thanks also 9}to JACK GEDALIUS and BARBARA KELLER for getting their respective writings to me in a timely manner. I guess what I've9} learned here is that you might not be able to count on others for articles all the time, but when those articles do9} appear they're usually great. The Internet has been both a boon and a detriment to my being able to produce ne9}wsletters over my tenure. It has provided me with lots of material -- technical articles, opinions, and the9} means to contact others. But it has also contributed to the diminishing number of user group newsletters that are9} part of our exchange program. Even before I was the editor of this newsletter, I wrote the Newsletter Review colu9}mn and thus also became Newsletter Librarian. I can say that the number of newsletters we receive from other user9} groups is now less than one- third of what we used to receive back then. Much of this is due to the demise of th9}e user groups involved in producing them, but in some cases the clubs did survive and their newsletters were 9} supplanted by Internet-based activities. However, print newsletters specific to our 8- bit are still being 9 }produced, principally by such organizations as Pinellas County ACE, The San Leandro Computer Club, the JACG, the Garde9!}n City ACE, IMAGE, the AAAUA, LVAUG, Club Cenacle of France, and the print magazine that accompanies the disk- based9"} newsletter produced by ABBUC of Germany (I wish I could read French one-tenth as well as I read English and German 9#}one-tenth as well as I read French!) I'm happy to say that RON FETZER has expressed an interest in being the new 9$}custodian of the print newsletters we receive. I'm also proud to have played a relatively minor part 9%}in the continuing presence of disk-based newsletters. Our format may not be as fancy as that of ABBUC, but it has9&} been praised widely for its readability and ease of navigation. Thanks to TOM ANDREWS for continued improv9'}ements in this area. Very recently, another user group of which I'm a member took a sudden turn. It was headed t9(}oward being a user group for alternative operating systems (Linux, BEOS) that run on the PC. After several months of t9)}rying to start in that direction, the members realized that there was a more widespread need to support m9*}ainstream PC users (Windows 95/98) -- even if those users were complete novices. Many PC user groups are so intimidat9+}ing to novices, perhaps not intentionally, that the newbies don't even ask questions. To that end, the group to which I 9,}referred will choose a name and acronym to suggest that even first-time users can get help from them. Furthermore, 9-}the group is planning a web site with links to all of the realy good help sites. In my tenure as OHAUG Newsletter edi9.}tor, I've very often hinted at the role that OHAUG could play in helping new Atari 8-bitters. I'm proud to say th9/}at we've done that to a great degree. The newsletter could continue to be a vehicle for that support, a90}nd I hope that it will. And may I suggest that OHAUG could have a presence of the Web as well? Or even dare to 91}suggest that such a web site could cater to 8-bit newbies? I got into computing in general and Atari 8-bittin92}g in specific in a way that's perhaps very different from your experience. I was motivated to do so by a question on 93} an interview exam I was taking for a New York City teaching license in the early 1980s. (Although I held several licen94}ses, I was interested in one more.) On this test, I was presented with a situation in which I was the teacher 95}of a small special education class in a school whose PTA was going to raise money to buy the school ONE computer. I had t96}o tell the examiners how I would convince the school to involve my students, how I'd utilize my paraprofessional97} in fund-raising, and a host of other computer-related and education-related questions. At the time I knew nothing abo98}ut computers! I managed to ace the interview. But a year later, on a sabbatical leave, I began to learn a l99}ittle about computers by learning to program in COBOL on a terminal connected to a mainframe. The bug b9:}it -- hard. In time, I had my wife convinced that a computer would help the whole family. It would provide education9;}al activities for our kids; it would give my wife and me tools to use in our teaching. Why did I choose Atari? 9<} Ease of use; brilliant, easily-programmed sound and graphics; and a good, all-around machine with software to 9=} support it were the key reasons. To this day, I see computers more as communication and education aids than as busi9>}ness tools. It is my hope that OHAUG, through it's disk-based newsletter, continues to emphasize those aspects of9?} computing. In December, I'm giving up the newsletter, which I've edited for three-plus years. I'm giving u9@}p my 8-bit hardware, software, documentation and technical articles to make room and time for what I hope wi9A}ll be a new career. I will continue to be an OHAUG member, although I probably won't get to every meet9F} o=o=o=o=o= ! IMPORTANT ! RON FETZER will become the new newsletter librarian, as well=C} as the editor of the next issue of the OHAUG newsletter. Therefore, from this point on and until further notice,=D} please send all exchange newsletters, articles, etc., to: Ron Fetzer 22 Monaco Avenue Elm=E}ont, NY 11003 Thank you very much. o=o=o=o=o=<Aing. I'll also continue to enjoy the feel of Atari 8-bitting in emulation on my PC. It's a feeling that I hope I 9G}can keep with me forever. Thank you for allowing me to be your editor. Alan Sharkis o=o=o=o=o=8z o=o=o=o=o= Delphi Warning Here's an email message I received from TOM ANDREWS. It should bAI}e taken at face value as a warning that the service described in it will cease on January 1st, 2000. But beyond that,AJ} it is a reflection of the constantly shrinking number of ISPs that offer text-based service. I see it as a trend tAK}hat will continue to affect us adversely until one of two things happens: 1. We all use PCs, or Macs for AL} Internet access; or, 2. Those in our community who are developing more advanced Internet accessAM} tools for our 8-bits are successful. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - From: TAN}o: Subject: Delphi Access Date: Saturday, October 23, 1999 10:50 PM It's probably too late AO}to make your last issue of the Ol' Hackers' Newsletter, but here's a bit of news that might be important: DelphiAP} Internet has announced that as of January 1, 2000, members will no longer be able to access Delphi's Textside by dAQ}irect dialing through SprintNet or TymNet. Access will still be available through an Internet connection anAR}d Telnet, or by direct dialing of Delphi's local numbers. According to Dana Jacobsen, Manager of Delphi's Atari AdAS}vantage Forum, the problem rests with the software used to make the SprintNet and TymNet connections. ThisAT} software is not Y2K compliant, and "no one seems interested in fixing it." There's little else to say. This AU}means that Genie will soon be the only national online service that the Atari 8-bit can use directly, and how long GenAV}ie will last is anybody's guess. One more nail in the coffin, I guess. There is SLIP/PPP and Telnet software AW}available for the ST, so I will continue to be able to use Delphi's Textside, but none of the programs my advisors havAX}e heard about support uploading/downloading. The Chrystal Atari Browser does support up/down-loading, and the lAY}atest version supports "cookies," so perhaps I can work things around that way. We'll see. Tom - - - - - - - -AZ} - - - - - - - - - - - Tom Andrews has raised a serious question. As I've stated above, there are two possibA[}le solutions to the shrinking text-based Internet access we can utilize with our 8- bits. I've been using a PC fA\}or some years now. It accomplishes many things for me, including graphics- based Internet access AND supportingA]} my Atari 8-bit hobby. But, I'd be the LAST person to advocate buying a PC for one function only. Sooner or later, A^} anyone who does is going to find themselves over their heads in technical stuff that didn't SEEM to be related to A_}Internet access when they bought the machine. What about WebTV? I'm still not convinced that WebTV is the answA`}er for us 8-bitters who wish Internet access. To my knowledge, only one or two of our members are using it, and theyAa} could probably tell us of their experiences with it. I wish they would. Tom's message makes it clear that neiAb}ther Sprint, nor TymNet, nor Delphi wish to make an investment in new Unix-based software unless that move will bAc}e paid for by the current user base. I would imagine that the user base in question is rather small, anyway. DelAd}phi states that it is willing to continue the service for those who can reach it by Telnet or other Internet connectAe}ion. That implies that the user have another ISP THAT PROVIDES SHELL ACCOUNTS with a local access number -- somethiAf}ng that Tom won't need since he has an ST, but something that many 8-bitters will not be able to do. Apparently neither TymNet, DAr}elphi nor Sprint has investigated this question to their satisfaction. What about the development of TCP/IP staAs}cks, PPP or SLIP connections and a graphical browser for our 8-bits? Once again, these are being worked on by some iAt}n our community. Progress is slow -- remember, we are all hobbyists. Can it happen some day? I hope it does Au}happen -- soon! Let's give those guys some support. Al Sharkis deEz}moed our last newsletter which had the game Hot Lips. It is similar to Pac Man. It's cute! There were no side enE{}trances as are found in Pac Man. He also demoed Space Ace which is similar to Space Invaders. On the opposite sE|}ide is a business program consisting of calculation of amortization and other types of conversion factors. Do yE}}ou know that this is the twentieth year of the Atari platform? At our October meeting the club deE~}moed a tutoring program for beginners of Atari basic which consisted of graphics and sound parts in basic.E} These were on cassettes. Therefore, voice was available in aiding the learner in the program. Ron Fetzer demoed ABE}BUC disk no. 58 which has many programs. I will mention a few of them: Illusion # 3, which is a sound E} demo, showed three musicians on screen, 0ne with a keyboard, one with a guitar, and one with a drum. E} The graphics were excellent. Dangerous Street is a game having dogs, cats, and cars on E} the street. One must cross the street while avoiding these obstacles. You may even shoot at tE}he cars! Another program is SIO Routing and Patches for an IDE interface produced in Germany. This disE}k has tests to check out your joystick. It also had a modified file handler, micropainter for 62- sector format pE}ictures, Sparta Dos text files showing how to make 80- column screens. You can see that this disk has many good E}utilities. The members discussed the emulation between the Atari and the PC. BYE FOR NOW, JAE}CK GEDALIUS o=o=o=o=o=D) o=o=o=o=o= MINUTES OF OHAUG MEETING 10/30/99 The meeting opened with the TREASURY report. If anyone is I}interested, let us know. Also, TOM ANDREWS explained problems he is having with his Delphi service provider and wilI}l have to use his ST system for Internet access. Alan also informed us that NassauNet is having serious problems. I} RON FETZER asked for clarification on who will be editing the newsletter after him. RON will do the newsletter for JI}anuary, February and March. JACK GEDALIUS will do April, May and June. HARRY TUTHILL will do July, August and SeptI}ember. MEL LEVINE will do October, November, and December. DEMONSTRATIONS: ALAN SHARKIS demoed a 410 and a 1010 & I} cassettes he is giving away that explain how to use the ATARI to do programming in BASIC. RON FETZER demoed an ABBUI}C disk #58,a sound demo called Illusion #3 and other programs. There were no door prizes but many items from ALI}AN SHARKIS for give away. Things can only improve from here on in! There are changes in the lineup of editors for the newsk}letter. They were determined at the October meeting, after I had already written the rest of my columns. Sk}ee the October meeting minutes for the new lineup. There are also changes in the email addresses. Please be sure k}to check them, also. Due to the fact that we had our October meeting late in the month and the November meeting early ink} the month, this newsletter may not be mailed out at the November meeting. If this is the case, it will be mailedk} as soon after that meeting as possible. On Side 1, the program that runs from the spacebar is TRAPPED.BAS. It's a gk}ame in which you and a partner can be 'hunter' and 'hunted,' or, if you want to play as a single player, you can takek} either role with the computer playing the other. There are nine positions on the board. Instructions tellk} you what constitues winning or losing for each role, so please pay attention to them. The game plays slowly. I wok}nder if it can be speeded up by using TurboBasic? RON? Please also check for GUNS.BAS, an artillery simulak}tion game. You and your opponent must fire at each other over terrain that is set for each round by the cok}mputer, as is the wind direction and velocity. You must determine the angle of your gun and the powder charge to k}be used. The game moves to a new terrain whenever a player hits his opponent's gun and the game is over when powdek}r runs out. The Wizard's Sword is a very elaborate text adventure game which is also found on Side 1. To use ik}t, copy the files WIZARD1.BAS, WIZARD2.BAS and WIZARD3.BAS to a new disk with DOS files on it. Boot the new disk k} in drive 1 from BASIC and run WIZARD1.BAS. RECOVER.COM is a SpartaDos utility which helps to fix prok}blems in SpartaDos 3.2x directories. Load it with the option from DOS. I haven't tested it, so k} you're on your own! SHPTOOL2.COM allows you to print out thumbnails of all the Print Shop graphics on a Prik}nt Shop Graphics Disk. Load it from DOS with the option. On Side 2, the program that runs from the spacebar isk} CLAYTON WALNUM's Slave Cellars of Golgoloth, an adventure game. The filename is SLVCEL.BAS, if you want tk}o copy it to another disk. Please also check for three files beginning with the word, "TITLE." TITLE.BAS is a program k}that allows you to create fancy title screens for your BASIC programs and then include them in your program. TIk}TLE.DAT is a data file needed by TITLE.BAS. Finally, TITLE.DOC gives you the commands you need in order to use TITLE.k}BAS. You should copy these three files onto a new disk with DOS files on it, and use them from there. EARTRN.BAS is k}for the budding musicians out there. It's an ear- training program that's rather elaborate. Try it out.k} Finally, there's MINIDOS.COM. This is a small substitute for Atari DOS but can also be used in conjunction with Atk}ari DOS. To use it, copy it to a new disk with DOS files on it and rename it AUTORUN.SYS.
