There was nothing fancy about it. It might have taken me a few hours,} of exploration to find out what kind of configuring was possible on it, but basically, it worked out of the box. A bi,}t later on, I bought a 2400 baud, error correcting and compressing modem. It was a Practical Peripherals v.42bis. ,}Once again, there wasn't much that had to be done to it to make it work. When I bought my first PC, a '286 machine, I si,}mply added some cables and an AB switchbox to the modem so it could serve the PC as well as the Atari. Once again, th,}ere really wasn't much to configure for each machine, and a simple initialization string sent out from each compu,}ter's terminal program at bootup did the trick. My next PC contained an internal US Robotics (now 3Com) 28.8 Kbps m,}odem that was configured by the people who assembled the PC for me. Of course, I went over the way it was done, and re,}ad its manual to see if I could duplicate their efforts, if necessary. It became necessary when I switch,}ed from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95. The modem was not considered "plug-and-play," and I had to reconfigure ev,}erything again. No sweat! Only a few hours of my time to make the switch of operating systems, with perhaps a h,}alf-hour or less of that time taken up with modem concerns. Meantime, my Atari was still happily purring along at 2,}400 baud. No Atari file that I could find was so large that I couldn't reasonably up- or download it in a sho,}rt time even at that slow speed. PC files were another matter. But I couldn't help thinking what the process wo,}uld be like if I switched my Atari over to an external version of the modem I had in the PC. I've had many opportuni,} o=o=o=o=o= ??? EDDD ??? Okay, okay, so what's with this EDDD stuff already? EDDD is si0}mply our way of saying, "Enhanced-Density Debut Disk." Yes, folks, that's correct. This is the first in what promis0}es to be a long line of Ol' Hackers newsletter disks produced in enhanced density. Your editor, always a glut0}ton for punishment, has taken on the challenge of cramming more into each issue. It is delightful to be abl0}e to report that I've exceeded even my own expectations on this disk. I'd be overly optimistic, however, to assume tha0}t I, alone, can provide enough material to fill both sides of each future issue now that the disks have expanded. The0}refore (you knew it was coming) I'm asking for contributions from each and every one of you. What I'd like to 0}see contributed is articles, articles, articles! We have enough programs, between our copy of Pool Disk 1 an0}d sources on the Internet to take us well into the next century. I will steal, and you will see examples in this issue, 0} all the humorous material I can get. I really need hard articles from you. Share your experiences with a pa0}rticular program or piece of hardware. If the venture has been an unqualified success, that's fine. But even if yo0}u didn't totally succeed, or perhaps had a disaster, we'd still like to hear about it. You may be conveying a helpfu0}l warning. You may be stimulating others to help you with your problem. You just never know when an article you s0}end will be a springboard for discussion, thought, rescue missions, etc. Read the article I wrote about modems. 0} If the process is similar to one you've experienced, share it with the rest of the membership. You'll get the fee0}dback you wish you had all along. If you need help writing the article, just send me an outline and I'll help you put it 0}into words. Alan o=o=o=o=o=0/ties since then to configure modems for fellow Atari 8-bitters. It has become a most frustrating experience for th,}em, and sometimes for me. One source of that frustration is that modems are sold with the assumption that you wil,}l use them with a PC or Mac. That kind of thinking is so entrenched that the modems themselves have no DIP switc,}hes, must be configured through software, and manuals are often not worth the paper on which they are printed. ,} The manuals today leave almost everything to the setup programs included on 3.5" floppy or CD-ROM to be run on that P,}C or Mac the modem manufacturer assumes you will be using. You're lucky if you get a list of commands, and th,}en there are often limited or confusing explanations of those commands. But, having been through the process with some,} of the members, I felt prepared to do it for Ron Fetzer when he asked me to help him. Ron was given a 56Kbps, external,}, US Robotics modem by a neighbor. Ron assumed, correctly, that he could run the modem at up to 9600 baud using hi,}s Atari and either his p: R: Connection or his 850 Interface. He was not prepared for the fact that his neigh,}bor had, somehow, lost the manual and the power supply. So, Ron took my advice, secured a power supply and a ,}manual from the manufacturer and tried the modem at its initial factory settings. He connected the modem using,} the same special Atari modem cable he had used successfully with his 2400 baud modem. He fired up Ice-T 2.72, -}set the baud rate to 9600, and dialed a number. The modem dialed and connected, but then would neither tra-}nsmit nor receive data. Ron brought the modem to the OHAUG meeting in August, where we confirmed what it was doing.-} However, under the pressure of several people trying to fix a 1050 disk drive at one end of the room and the ant-}icipated arrival of our president and the formal start of the meeting, I decided the modem had to come home-} with me. At home, I also confirmed what the modem was doing. The US Robotics manual for Ron's modem is a bit be-}tter than most. It lists the commands, with descriptions of each, in alphabetical order. It also has, predictably, a -}lot of space devoted to setting the modem up under DOS, under Windows 3.1, and under Windows 95. In addition, each-} of these topics is doubled because the manual covers both the internal and external versions of this modem. I di-}dn't need any of that stuff for this job. I did need the annotated list of commands, and prayed that I wouldn't - } have to resort to configuring individual s-registers. I was comforted by the fact that any changes I made cou- }ld be saved in what is refered to as "profiles" in the modem's non-volatile memory. So, I took that list of com- }mands and divided it into those that had an obvious impact on Ron's situation, those that obviously didn't, - }and those in a gray area in-between. I decided that I'd try the first group right away, changing each setting, try- }ing the modem, and changing the setting back if it didn't provide the desired result. At the end of going through thi-}s group, Ron's problem was still not solved. I decided to try the questionable commands next, and here's where I hit-} pay-dirt. The command, "AT&Rn" turned out to be exactly what I needed. "AT&R0" was listed as RESERVE-}D. I knew that was not appropriate. "AT&R2" was the factory default, and its description was, "Received Data -}to Computer Only on RTS." But, "AT&R1 -- Modem Ignores RTS," turned out to be correct. After finding that out,-} I stored the setting in the modem with an "AT&W0." Now, why did that happen? I had previously, as part -}of my first group of commands, put the modem into software flow control only, and there was no change. Also, the RT-}S line is included in the Atari modem cable. (I know -- I checked the P: R: Connection manual for the pinout.) -}A call to Frank Walters cleared up the mystery. Even though that line is in the cable, and PCs usually use it, the A-}tari ignores the state of the RTS line and, therefore, SO MUST THE MODEM. Ron now has a modem that will function at 9-}600 baud -- faster if he goes to a Black Box or MIO -- and I've learned something. I think a note here about mo-}dem cables is appropriate, too. If we 8- bitters are going to use non-direct- connect modems, they must be external mod-}ems, and they must be connected to our interface with a cable. This cable may LOOK like a "standard" 9- pin to 25-}-pin RS-232 cable, but it just isn't. You can't go into a computer store and pick up such a "standard" cable a-}nd expect it to work. If you did, the first thing you'd notice is that the 9-pin end has a female plug and so-} does your interface! You might be tempted to go back and pick up a gender-changer to solve that problem. You see, the "standard" for that so-called "standard" c->}able was developed by IBM _AFTER_ Atari had produced the 850 Interface! (Maybe we should claim to be standard since -?} we were there first, but that's another matter.) So, what should you do? One approach is to take a "standard" c-@}able, cut off the 9-pin connector, which is probably factory-molded. Then, with the following pinout, either solde-A}r or crimp the leads (which you've buzzed out to identify them) to the pins of a DB9 male plug: DB25 Male -B} DB9 Male --------- -------- 20 1 8 2 2 3 -C} 3 4 7 5 6 6 4 7 5 8 F-D}rame to No connection shield wire to shield I've done this a few times, but I don't advise that you-E} do it. Add the cost of those items, and -F}perhaps tools and solder to the cost of a factory-assembled "standard" cable WHICH YOU MUST CUT, the time it takes-G} to trace out the leads (all 25 plus a shield) and do the crimping or soldering, and you're better off orderin-H}g an Atari modem cable from Best, B&C, or American TechniVision (if they still have them.) Andrews "I'm gonna need your help 5Q}today," Dad said that sunny July morning. "We've got a lot of hay to get in, and your Grandfather can't be here to he5R}lp. You're going to drive the tractor for me." I must have been 11 at the time, and this was something I hadn't hea5S}rd before. Dad started with a basic demonstration, driving while I watched. "Keep the windrow in the cent5T}er of the pickup, if you can, like this, and move your head forward and back to watch where you're going and where t5U}he hay is going. Glance back at the wagon, too, and watch for my signals. If I want you to go faster, I'll move my hand l5V}ike this. Listen closely, because if I want you to stop in a hurry I'll yell, 'Whoa!' Got all that? All right 5W}-- your turn." Dad rode along while I drove a few feet. Then, with a word of encouragement, he left to l5X}oad the wagon. I was on my own on the tractor, saddled with the heaviest responsibility I'd ever carried. A T5Y}EMPERED TEMPER. Dad wasn't one to have much tolerance with stupid mistakes, but that day he was a monument of patience. 5Z} He must have realized how scared I was of messing up. When I drifted off the windrow because I watched the b5[}aler too much, he simply pointed it out and told me how to adjust -- every time it happened. When the knotter foul5\}ed up and I missed his "Whoa!" he just told me to pay better attention. When I fed in a big wad of hay too fast and 5]}broke the shear bolt, he calmed my fears, taking the blame onto himself for "not raking it right." I know now how tre5^}mendous an effort he made at keeping all the little frustrations of the day to himself, realizing that it wouldn'5_}t take much to shake my feeble confidence. We managed to get all that hay baled. When it was all put away for the n5`}ight, Dad turned to me and said, "Thanks, Kid. I never could've done it withoutcha." That was a milestone I'll5a} never forget. It felt good. It felt very good. A SLOW CHANGE Things changed after that, slowly at first, but fas5b}ter as time went on. No longer did I "help" around the farm, I truly did help. Dad and Gramp started teachi5c}ng me how to drive the tractor and operate the machinery behind it. I learned how to plow straight, even furrows5d}, how to tell when hay is ready to bale, how to stack hay in the mow so it cures properly, how to use my imaginat5e}ion to keep a machine going when the parts dealer is closed for the weekend, how to stick with a task until it is comp5f}leted, and how to do what has to be done whether I want to or not. I learned how to be a farmer, and a man. I'm 5g}nearly 50 now. My younger brother and I own and operate the farm where we grew up. And 5t}perhaps I might be forgiven if, just once, my eyes mist over and I drift off the windrow, just a little. Thanks 5u} Dad. We never could've done it withoutcha. Tom Andrews o=o=o=o=o=4Z o=o=o=o=o= MINUTES OF OHAUG MEETING JULY 18,1998 JACK GEDALIUS opened the meeting by calling on ALAN SEw}HARKIS for a report. Alan described an Internet mailing list. It works like this: you have an e-mail address on the iEx}nternet and you subscribe to a mailing list. You then get everything everyone sends in to that mailing list. If you seEy}nd a message everyone who's on this list also gets it. It's almost like a private newsgroup, with less adEz}vertising and spam. There is an existing list ALAN subscribes to that deals with Atari 8-bits and provides very usefE{}ul information. ALAN has instructions on how to subscribe (or unsubscribe if you don't want so many messages) and passE|}ed out copies of them to the members. Also, in Canada, is LES WAGAR, who was a member of NOSAUG before it folE}}ded. At one time, Les had written a bunch of disk utilities which were published on an A.I.M. disk. Les stated to AE~}lan that he needs a place like Ol'Hackers for this disk to reside, so he sent it to Alan who suggested he might E}want to join our club and sent him a flyer from the ones we gave JOHN HARDIE. Alan will submit this disk to our LE}ibrary. A discussion then followed on this matter followed by questions about subscribing to the e-mail list. TE}REASURY REPORT: RON FETZER reported that we're in the black. Discussion then followed about future meeting dates at tE}he library. Most members of our group will not be able to attend the Suffolk meeting on August 1, 1998 but will plaE}n to have our meeting August 15th. A brief discussion then followed about the World of Atari Show in August. DEME}ONSTRATIONS: RON FETZER demoed a German disk from ABBUC magazine #53 2nd quarter 1998 on how to use the XEP80 withE} a TV (XED80), and how to use regular density instead of enhanced density, and how to play Ultimate Reality, aE}lso how to make an Atari interface for the IBM keyboard (the old Atari keyboard stays on it too.) (Library #726). E}ALAN SHARKIS demoed a disk called Tom's Pack (Library #727). The next disk is called Cassette to Disk wich ALAN demE}oed (Library #728) and then the XF2 Utilities disk (Library #729). ALAN then demoed an HTML decoder for theE} Atari 8-bit (Library #730). Also demoed a Dynademo disk (Library #731). And finally a disk from Les Wagar, a formeE}r member of NOSAUG which he calls "Disk Utilities" (Library #732). ALAN then led a discussion on what is theE} function of a user group on a national basis in response to a message that he read on FidoNet. The door prizesE} were won by Harry Tuhill, Ron Fetzer, and Pat Mulvey. The next meeting will be on August 15, 1998 at the Library E}as usual. o=o=o=o=o=D' o=o=o=o=o= PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE by Jack Gedalius July-August, 1998 At the JI}uly 18 meeting, Al Sharkis demonstrated the ABBUC Disk number 53, which had good opening graphics and a music pI}rogram, which played various musical instruments. He also demonstrated another disk called FX Tools. In addition, he I} demonstrated an html (a page-formatting language for the Internet) file, and converted it for Atari. Al also descriI}bed a utility disk compiled by Les Wagar, a new member to our club. At the August meeting, Al Sharkis described the I}fourth version of our new utility disk from Les Wagar. This disk contains utilities to check the density of the disI}k in the drive, the directory in BASIC, a sector copier, controlling of files, restoring deleted files, a I}special disk locker, a line renumberer, and many more great features. Alan asked for somebody to volunteer to take theI} disk and work up a comprehensive demonstration of it, because time would not allow him to do justice to that taI}sk. He also demonstrated a disk called Spiele Disk from ABBUC. This disk contains seven games: a game consistinI}g of a labyrinth in a castle, a skateboarding game, Balloon 087 -- flying a balloon through good and bad weather, IcI}e(a labyrinth game), Adebar -- a game about a stork, Last Oldtimer(similar to Pac- Man) and Jinks, a glider gamI}e. We look forward to seeing everyone next month. BYE FOR NOW, JACK GEDALIUS I} o=o=o=o=o=H o=o=o=o=o=MINUTES OF OHAUG MEETING AUGUST 15,1998 TREASURER'S REPORT: RON FETZER reports that everythingM} is in the black. ALAN SHARKIS announced JOHN POWELL became the father of a baby boy named Brandon Bayden Powell May M}12,1998; 6 lb. 9 1/2 oz. ALAN also mentioned that he has flyers from THOMAS RAY extolling the virtues of WEB M}TV. These were passed around the room. Also, we have a new member named LES WAGAR who has sent us so far 2 verM}sions of his disk utilities. Alan held up revision 3, which he will not submit to the library, because he now has revisiM}on 4 to submit! Then, since HARVEY SCHOEN OF LIAUG was a guest at our meeting today, ALAN gave everyone the new WeM}b page address for LIAUG: http://members.xoom.com/LIAUGNET Then ALAN gave members a copy of the Disk Utilities toM} copy for the library #732. We jokiningly expressed the hope that this is the last revision! DEMONSTRATM}IONS: ALAN demoed SonderMagazin #23 from ABBUC 10/98. The printed magazine that came with it contained a listing oM}f ABBUC's P/D catalog (Library #733). DOOR PRIZES: Mel Levine, Frank Kuzloski, Harold Pegler and Harry Tuthill.M} FUTURE MEETING DATES: September 12, 1998 October 10, 1998 (Joint meeting!) All of thQ}e programs on this disk have come from 1989 issues of A.N.A.L.O.G Magazine. On Side 1, the program that runs from tQ}he spacebar is TXCRUNCH.BAS. It will remind you of several well-known games. It's also a game that should play rathQ}er intuitively. You will also see UNIVERT.BAS, a unit converter. I tried this one only briefly, and I Q} know that it can convert from English to English, metric to metric AND English to metric and metric to EnQ}glish units. You will see SNOWPLOW.OBJ on this side of the disk. If you copy SNOWPLOW. OBJ to another diskQ}, be sure you also copy over SNOW.PT1 through SNOW.PT5. SNOWPLOW.OBJ is a very interesting game. You will be drQ}iving a snowplow and trying to avoid obvious obstacles, but you will also, at times, be driving blind. When you aQ}re blind, some interesting other features will make their presence known. CLOWN.OBJ is another enjoyable game. PQ}lease read all of the text articles accessible from the menu on this side of the disk. There have been changes in tQ}he meeting dates and the e-mail addresses of our members. TOM ANDREWS has contributed an article that's superb, too. OQ}n Side 2, the program that runs from the spacebar is SKYRISER.BAS. Although this is a two-player game, it can Q} be played by one quite successfully. It's quite challenging. Also on Side 2, look for MANDELBT.BAQ}S. This program creates fractal images and is one of the best I've seen. The files, MAN1, MAN2 and MAN3 are exampleQ}s and can be loaded from the program. There have been many reviews of the World of Atari '98 show. Five of them aQ}re on this side as WOA98.ARC. You will have to unArc them, so I've also included UNARC.COM, but please be sure to uQ}nArc them to a separate disk! I've compressed those articles because the emphasis in all of them is on video games, noQ}t on computing. Otherwise, I would have made them text files to read from the menu. Note that several of theQ}m are copyrighted and must be reprinted in their entirety. Also note that they were all originally HTML documents onQ} Web sites and that I had to take out the HTML formatting and substitute some of the special symbols so that 8-bit Q}Atarians could print them out without problems. They are straight ASCII files once they are unArc'd. Please read theQ} text articles from the menu on this side, too. There's at least one new feature to explore. o=o=o=o=o=Q}text articles from the menu on this side, too.
