Thanks. o=o=o=o=o=0q o=o=o=o=o= MINUTES OF OHAUG MEETING 7/10/99 In the absence of our Club President, our Vice President 4} RON FETZER took charge of the meeting. After a brief discussion about PC's the meeting opened. An announcement w4}as made that next Saturday, July 17,1999, at 2PM Club members are invited to our President, JACK GEDALIUS home for a4} barbeque. RON then opened the meeting for discussion. TREASURY REPORT: We are in the black. ALAN SHARKIS sta4}ted that A member from OHAUG in Arlington, TX, GREG GOODWIN is putting together a Mega List of Atari users and h4}e would like all the users groups members names for the list. ALAN asked that members think about this. H4}ARRY TUTHILL reminded ALAN that JOE LEBER would not like his name being on the list. ALAN suggested that Greg Go4}odwin's name/address be in the next Newsletter & if anyone wants their name included in the list they should send it to4} him. Everyone agreed. DEMONSTRATIONS: RON FETZER then gave everyone a copy of a disk he prepared on how to do the4} Newsletter. He then demoed the disk. He showed how to type new information and how to update the Welcome Scr4}een, how to go to DOS. RON FETZER then demoed an ABBUC Magazine disk #57 second quarter 1999. The intro fo4}r this disk, prepared by Sysop Fox-1, sent "greetinx" to OHAUG members ALAN SHARKIS and PATRICK MULVEY. O4}n Side 1 was music and included "Adventure Game","The Land of Horror". Then there was a multiplication program4} called "Word Inventory" all in German (Library #742). After the break we tried to use the modem to go on the interne4}t but the library connection was dead. We are going to try to have it restored for the August meeting. ALAN SHARKIS4} then demoed the July/August Newsletter. He mentioned that members should check the email address list for chan4}ges. On side 1 of the Newsletter he played a fun game of chance with 3 men and the Atari gambling to win and 4}we all enjoyed. After that Alan demoed a music program that was very nice. Then he showed us a couple of games4} on Side 2. There were no door prizes given at this meeting. The date of the next meeting is August 14, 1999. A5}fter that our President Jack Gedalius will arrange the future dates with the library. o=o=o=o=o=4y o=o=o=o=o= ATOMIT REVISITED I inadvertantly opened a can of worms last issue by including t9}he game, "Atomit" on the newsletter disk. This is one of the most fascinating, yet one of the most frustrating games9} written for the Atari 8-bit (see Editor's Notes of the July/August issue if you haven't played the game yet, 9}and then play it!) The time limit for each screen is the major cause of the frustration that most players feel.9} JOSEPH E. HICSWA, OHAUG member and President of the JACG, sent me a letter and a disk. He used the CHIPMU9}NK (Microdaft) copy program to make a copy of the game and simultaneously free up the unused sectors on th9}e disk so that he could include a copy of his letter and some files that he created that would help anyone master the game9}. In short, he developed a "cheat" for the game. But he couldn't do that unless he could find a way to defeat the9 } timer. Joe discovered that the key combination pauses (and unpauses) the game. Armed with that9 } fact, Joe designed a grid that could be printed out from any word- processor. Joe included a file that is pr9 }operly set up for XLENT (ATOMGRID.XLT) and a generic "ASCII" file (ATOMGRID.ASC), and I've put the two of them on 9 }this disk. If you use a word-processor other than XLENT, Joe states that you must set your left margin at zero,9 } your right margin at 79, and use a page length of 61 lines. Joe uses his grid to diagram the game screen at each9} level, showing the barriers, outlines of the playfield, and the pre-play locations of the cursor and the atoms. He9} sent me a copy of his "cheat" for the first screen, complete with the directions of all moves. Although I 9}can't include that diagram here, I can tell you that Joe was able to do the first screen in twenty-seven moves. Joe sug9}gested that the OHAUG run a contest to see who can solve the game in the least number of moves at each level. But, th9}en, we should have many winners if our members use Joe's grid techinique, shouldn't we? Whether we run such a contest 9}or not, and whether you use Joe's grid or just try slugging out the game on your own, I think we should thank Joe9} for the work he put into this project. It was a very interesting educational demo. We alsoM} looked at some programs from the previous newsletter disk. At this meeting and the following meeting, Al dM}iscussed the Linux-6 version for the IBM system. I was unable to attend the July meeting because I was picking uM}p my 14-year old daughter from Vassar College, where she was taking summer courses. On July 17, we had a tM}errific barbecue, at my home, which was attended by all of the local members. The weather was beautiful and theM} food was plentiful. Everybody enjoyed themselves. On August 8, Al Sharkis's son TED got married to a lovely laM}dy named AMY. We wish them a happy marriage filled with many joyous events. At our August meeting, I showed a videoM} tape of the barbecue party that was held at my house. Al Sharkis demoed a disk that had fifteen different versions M} of DOS, taken from the website of ERHARD PUETZ, also known as "Atreju." Erhard is a most prolific AtarianM}, having produced many hardware projects, programs, and general expertise via ABBUC, the Atari8-L MailiM}ng List (Polish) and the comp.sys.atari.8bit newsgroup. On this disk, Atari DOS 2.5 was represented iM}n both an English and a German version. It was interesting to see how DOS could be converted into so many forms.M} Alan also demoed Atari Artworx which came from Holland. This program helps you design and route printed- circuitM} boards. Included programs are an editor, a utility that transfers the finished designs from an Atari runnM}ing Artworx to a PC running Artworks (a similar program) and vice-versa. A third program prints the completed M}circuit board, but the author, RUDOLPH CORNELISSEN, states that this utility is not finished. The package can be uM}sed to design up to a four-layer circuit board. The two-disk set has the three programs and a short read-me on M}side one of the first disk, full documentation on side two of the first disk, and a second full disk of assemblyM} source code. I demoed the famous Atari Planetarium, showing the eclipse of August 11 over London. YouM} can really see the moon covering the sun as time moves on in this program. Then I showed a printout of the M}eclipse. This Atari program is phenomenal. We tested the library's telephone line by connecting to the NassauM} Net using Ice-T. We went on to CURT VENDEL's site. The meeting was great. BYE FOR NOW, M} JACK GEDALIUS o=o=o=o=o=L0 o=o=o=o=o= URL List So much has been happening in the 8- bit world! There are developmQ}ents galore, and websites have been springing up to tout them. I last published a list of URLs several yeR}ars back, and it's now time to update it. This list is long, and carries some annotation but not full descriptioR}ns -- we'd be reading the list forever if I did that! Most of the sites can be viewed in text form if you can connectR} that way with your 8-bit, but SO FAR, for best results, you should use a PC and the latest version you can get R} of either Netscape or Internet Explorer. Many of these sites are connected through the Atari 8-bit Webring. The hR}ome page of that Webring is on the list. A Webring is a way of linking pages of similar interest so that they can R}be found easily. Since our 8-bits can't underline, you will have to copy these URLs to a piece of paper or print R} out the article and then type them in from the PC's browser. Remember that "%7E" in 8-bit typing becomes R}a "tilde" on the PC and that "%3a" becomes a "colon" on the PC. Now there are several other important developments that are bringinV}g our Atari 8-bits closer to the Internet, either as stand-alone machines or through PCs running as proxy-servers.V} Steven Tucker has added a proxy server to A.P.E. 98 (now in Beta.) To demonstrate how it works, he has set upV} the second telnet-able Atari BBS. This one runs the freeware BBS Express (URL is also on that URL List.) In adV}dition, significant progress has been made in both Project Pheonix, an attempt to create a Web browser for our 8-bits, aV}nd Project ICE, which promises to bring direct dial-up Internet access to our 8-bits. I've also heard, but not V} confirmed that SMTP (sending e-mail messages) through a proxy-server has been accomplished. One of our members is also a member of the AUNT user group in ^}Texas, a frequent contributor to csa8 and the Polish mailing list. His name is GREG GOODWIN, but he is also known as^} Dr. Clu. Even though Greg was recently married, he finds time for his Atari hobby in general, and for specia^}l projects that must take considerable time and effort. One of these projects is the compilation of a "Meg^}a List" of Atari users. I suggested to Greg that he contact user groups to see if they would allow him to us^}e their membership lists. However, I also warned Greg that in some cases the clubs would protect the privacy of^} their members and not release the lists. Such was the case at OHAUG. However, you, as an individual member^}, are certainly free to release your own information to Greg should you wish to do so. His name and address are on^} the printed membership list that is dated February 20, 1999 and his e-mail address is in this newsletter's e-mail li^}st. While I don't have the specifics of what Greg plans to do with this Mega List, I can state that the co^}mpilation of similar lists in the past has led to such things as Atari Classics Magazine and other positive developmen^}ts in our community. The rest is up to you. o=o=o=o=o=Classics Magazine and other positive developmen\L o=o=o=o=o= MINUTES OF OHAUG MEETING AUGUST 14,1999 The meeting opened with ourb} President, JACK GEDALIUS showing members a video of our annual OHAUG picnic at JACK GEDALIUS home on Saturdb}ay, July 17th and was well attended. Jack's wife did the barbequing and a good time was had by all. Thank b}you JACK AND MARY GEDALIUS, our gracious host & hostess. JACK announced the upcoming meeting dates as b}follows: 9/18, 10/30, 11/13, 12/18, 1/8, 2/12, 3/18, 4/15, 5/13, 6/17. The meetings officially begin at 1PM and mb}ay end as late as 5PM. They will be held, as usual, at the Plainview-Old Bethpage Library in Nassau County, Long Island.b} TREASURER's REPORT: RON FETZER announced that we are in the black. ALAN SHARKIS reported on corresponb}dence from JOE HICSWA. The first letter JOE wrote was about the Newsletter going from 6 isues a year to 4 issues a yeab}r as he read in the last Newsletter. He wants to know if there will be an accompanying reduction in dues. Theb} annual dues will be $20 starting in the year 2000 instead of $24 as it was in the previous years. JOE HICSWA's seb}cond letter informed that he was frustrated by the game, Atomit on the back of the Newsletter disk. He found a wb}ay to make the game easier to play.JOE sent two files to ALAN which are the result of his research. ALAN mentionedb} some email he has received from a member regarding a problem with the mailing of the Newsletters. The problb}em was solved by Ron Fetzer. A discussion followed on the future of the Atari club and its members. DEMONSTRATIONS:b} ALAN SHARKIS demoed a menu-driven, multi-DOS disk. DOSs and utilities on the disk were as follows: Side 1 b} A. Atari DOS 2.0S B. Atari DOS 931 (makes 931 sectors; based on 2.0 S) C. Atarib} DOS 2.5 in German D. Atari DOS 2.5 in English E. Antic DOS F. OSA DOS 1.2 G. OSAb} DOS 2.0 H. OSA DOS 2.3 (these are all by OSS) I. ART DOS Rainbow J. Atari DOSb} 3.0 K. Double Set (a utility to set density) L. File copy (a utility that b}can copy multiple files) M. Initialize Disk N. Tape copy O. Happy Computer 2+Db} ALAN brought some of them up. Then he showed Side 2, which contained several commercial and freeware DOSs that b} are based on AtariDOS. The SpartaDos family was not represented. This DOS disk came from EHRHARD PUETZ, or "Atb}reju," who wrote this DOS disk and has been in the field for many long years making significant hardwareb} and software contributions along the way.(Library #743). Next ALAN SHARKIS demoed Artworx which consists of 2 b} disks. It's a companion program to Artworks, a PC program. This package allows the user to lay out, print, and b} transfer printed-circuit designs to the PC version. The author states that the printer program, however, ib}s incomplete. The editor, printer and transfer programs and the Readme are on side 1 of the first disk, and all documb}entation is on side 2 of the first disk. The second disk is devoted to the assembly source code for all threeb} programs which was also released as freeware. The cards can be up to four layers. The package comes from Hob}lland, with documentation written in English (Library # 744 and 745). JACK GEDALIUS demoed Atari Plb}anetarium which is one of the better programs that Atari made. JACK read some interesting information the program bb}rought up about the Earth and the moon. Then he showed the eclipse and how it happens. Then there followed a b}discussion of how our galaxy is, the infinite nature of the uiverse and the big bang theory. He showed the constellatiob}ns and read some interesting information about them. RON FETZER commented that the members were watching JACK perfb}orm miracles. Then the members went on the internet with Ice-T and brought up www.atari- history.com. This was done tob} check the phone line, which we discovered wasn't working at the last meeting, and which is certainly working now! b}There were no doorprizes for today's meeting.
