If item #1, above, doesn't make1v} sense toyou then study this manual!RUNNING THE AMIS BBSby Jerry Wright Your first action should be to create a "S1w}ystem" (back-up) Disk. Thiswill save you a lot of grief later on. Do the following: 1) Write DOS files to a fresh disk1x}. 2) Copy all files (except for the "KERMIT" & "SPACE#49" files) fromS*P*A*C*E Disk #49 to this new System Disk. 3) Re1y}name AUTORUN.BBS to AUTORUN.SYS on the System Disk. 4) Place your S*P*A*C*E Disk #48/49 in a safe, out-of-the-way place.1z}You are now ready to get set up to run your BBS! This system is designed to run on one or two disk drives, but can bee1{}asily modified to run on more. The basic bulletin board system consists oftwo disks. One, the System Disk, you have in you1|}r hand. The other, the FileDisk is now yours to create. First step is to format a blank disk and >DO NOT< put DOS on 1}}it. You wantas much space as is possible. After you've formatted your File Disk, get outyour System Disk and LOAD a progr1~}am called INIT.BBS. Remove your System Disk, and replace it with the File Disk, then type RUN.You will first be asked 1}for the number of sectors you wish to have set up formessages. A good number seems to be 300 which should hold between 75 a1}nd 100messages. The program will proceed to write to disk and fill 300 sectors withgarbage and the write a file called MES1}SAGE.ISM which is the INDEX file. You'll then be asked for the number of sectors for the CALLERS.DAT file, generally ab1}out 75 sectors is plenty as the caller data takes up so much lessroom. The various sector and byte locations are saved in a1} file known asCONFIG. Voila! the File Disk is initialized... Only... You need several other files to properly run th1}e board. Thefiles you need to create are WELCOME.UDL, BULLET.UDL, NEWUSER.UDL, OBBS.UDL.You also need PASSWORD.DAT, HELP.U1}DL and FUNC.DAT, but these three files arealready on your master diskette. After these are created then you may fill e1}xtra space with download files, all of which need to be followed with the .UDL extender. The Welcome file is the openin1}g message a caller will see after he hitsreturn. By the way the prompt checks to see what character issent as1} a return, and so knows what type of system to configure for. Next, any bulletins are called up from disk by BULLET.UDL1}, and if thecallers types in a "Y" to the New User prompt, the NEWUSER.UDL file willdisplay a brief runthrough of the syste1}m. The OBBS file stands for Other BBSsystems. A short listing of some ATARI bulletin boards is provided at the endof this1} tutorial. Other lists are available on S*P*A*C*E Disk #24/25 as wellas at most AMIS style boards including DOS FILE (ph 361}7-3453) in Seattle. FUNC.DAT is a list of various functions available on the BBS. A list willbe appended to this expl1}anation. HELP.UDL is an explanation of those functions.Okay, you've got all your files set up, now what? The p1}rogram, as presently set up, was devised to work with theMicroPeripheral A1A Modem and the 850 Interface. So, with that in 1}mind... First, install your system disk and boot up, making sure that the 850interface is turned on first. The Loader1} file should appear and load the BBSprogram which should then tell you to remove the System Disk and insert theFile Disk, a1}nd hit RETURN. After you do that and hit RETURN it should come up and say "SPACE AMIS IsFILE DISK in? Please take ou1}t the System Disk and put in the File Disk. Then it will ask for the number of the week day, 1 being Monday, and 7being1} Sunday... Then it will say "Enter mm/dd/yy", enter the month, day andyear in two digit, format for example 02/23/84 then h1}it RETURN and it will askyou for the time. Input this in twenty-four hour style e.g. 17:22:18, andhit RETURN. You should b1}e off and running. The other file you need to know about is MCOMPACT. This allows you tocompact (or delete) old, or 1}unnecessary messages from the message file. Various files such as WELCOME and BULLET may be created with TextWizard,or1} AtariWriter, or even typing C(opy) from DOS and typing E:,WELCOME.UDL whichwill save your text to disk. Use CTRL 3 (EOF) t1}o terminate. When the system is running, you may press the SELECT key to go into LOCALmode, which will allow you, as S1}YSOP to Enter, Retrieve, Download, etc. When in LOCAL mode, the sysop may press the ^ key (a shifted *) to getinto SYS1}OP functions.Other enhancements may be forthcoming, so keep in touch. TECHNICAL QUESTIONS SHOULD BE ADDRESSED TO THE SYSOPS IN SIG*ATARION COMPUSERVE. YOU'LL FIND THAT ANY QUESTION YOU R}MAY HAVE HAS MOST LIKELYBEEN ASKED BEFORE. SO, IF YOU DO HAVE A PROBLEM, DON'T HESITATE TO LOG ON ANDASK. THE SYSOP'S ARER} ALWAYS HAPPY TO HELP. This version of Kermit is for use with modems connected to the computervia the 850 interface mR}odule. A standard RS-232 handler is built-in. The program was originally written by John Palevich in ACTION! It hassR}ince been compiled with the "runtime package" and minor improvements added(version 1.3 was done by Jim Dahlberg). KermR}it is an upload/download protocol which is becoming very popular fortransferring data between many different types of computR}er systems. It is a public domain program, originally developed at the University ofColumbia. It is presently availabR}le for many micro and mainframe computers, including Atari ST's, IBM PCs, Commodore 64s, VAXes, CYBERs, CPM machines, and manR}y more. Both binary and text transfers are possible. To run Kermit, just put side #2 of this disk into drive #1, turn R}on yourmodem and all peripherals, and then turn on your computer (without BASIC).You will automatically end up at the DOS mR}enu. There, do a binary load(option "L") of "KERMIT.OBJ". Kermit will execute and display credits and themain menu. The R}first thing you should do from the main menu is select theParameter option. This will allow you to change BAUD rates, paritR}y, selecttext or binary transfers, default disk drive, etc. When you finish setting your options, you can press CTRL SR} to save thoseoptions to disk as the default settings the next time you boot Kermit. Press Qto quit back to the main menu.R} If you have a Hayes Smartmodem, the next thing you may want to do is setup a file of computer systems and phone numbeR}rs that you can autodial. To dothis select the autodial option. The screen will clear and then display theautodial screenR}. You can change or add systems, BAUD rates, and phone numbersby following the prompts on this screen. For example, to addR} or change asystem, use the cursor keys to get to the line you wish to edit, and thenpress the space bar. The program willR} respond with a ?, at which point you canuse all of the editing keys on the Atari including insert & delete character,to crR}eate/edit the information. An example is as follows: CompuServe (300) #375 9163 This will set up your modeR}m at 300 BAUD and dial the number 375-9163 whenyou select it. Just press return when the line is completed. When you R}have all your systems entered, press CTRL S to save the autodialfile to disk. To dial the number, move the cursor to the liR}ne desired, andpress return. If you do not want to autodial at this time, press ESC to getback to the main menu. To R}get into terminal mode, select the CONNECT option on the main menu. This will connect you to the system, at which time you caR}n dial up and log-onto the system. The display simulates an 80 column display using horizontalscrolling by pressing the STR}ART key to scroll left, or SHIFT plus START toscroll right (this is the same way Palevich implements 80-columns inChameleonR}). Pressing OPTION returns you to the main menu. To transfer files between to Ataris, one must select the SEND option R}"`"RDLB:D"NUR j +fromthe main menu, and the other the RECEIVE option. The program will prompt youfor the file name to send. You do not neeR}d to include the Dn: at thebeginning of the file name, as the default disk drive will automatically beassumed. When you haR}ve entered the file name, press RETURN, and the filetransfer will begin. One VERY POWERFUL feature of the file transfer is R}thatyou can use wildcarding to send more than one file! For example to send anENTIRE DISK, just specify *.* as the file naR}me. ALL files on the disk willthen be transferred. Note that only the SENDER must specify the file name. The user at the rR}eceiving end can just press return when prompted for a filename. However, the receive file name can be entered if you are cR}onnected toa host system which you have placed in the server mode.( Check the hostdocuments for further information on thisR} mode. The FINISH command is used to terminate the server mode in the host system. You also have a mini-DOS availR}able from the main menu, to allow you toread the disk directory, format disks, etc. This option will display anothermenu fR}or the DOS options. They are self-explanatory.NOTES: 1. Do not attempt to load Kermit after an RS-232 handler file (R}such asRS232.COM or an AUTORUN.SYS w/handler) has been loaded - a program crash willresult! Recovery requires a full rebooR}t of your system. 2. For best results remove/disable BASIC before running Kermit. 3. Atari DOS 2.5 does not seem R}to be compatible with this version ofKermit! 4. Rename KERMIT.OBJ to AUTORUN.SYS if automatic loading is desired. R} 5. Exiting Kermit (to DOS) often will require pressing the RESET key. With most DOSs reloading Kermit without rebooting theR} computer is not possible. 6. Delphi is expected to support Kermit sometime soon. Keep up-to-dateon this in the SIG*AR}tari on Delphi for more information.P&SEATTLE-PUGET SOUND ATARI COMPUTERENTHUS- IASTS Disk #49TELECOMMIII Updated:Apr16,86Librarian - Jim Chapman
