Press any key to resume normal drawing.D - Designer Fill D can fill an )}area with any pattern of the 64 in memory. Press D, then the keyboard key corresponding to the pattern you wish to fill)} with. REMEMBER, if the area is too con- voluted, the progam not complete it.M - Magnify mode toggle Use M to gain a c)}lose-up view of the screen area. The magnify mode colors are only valid for the line the cursor is on. Most commands op)}erate the same when magnify is on.1-4 - Select colors Push the numbers 1, 2, 3, or 4 to reset the present color (pc). )}The pc is the color almost everything is drawn with.F - Flood fill F will fill an area denoted by the color under th)}e cursor with the pc and store the area's shape in the Line Buffer. This takes a little while, be patient.P - Point mode Point mode is the standard drawing fare, press the button an)}d the brush leaves a mark on the screen.O - Box outline First, let me explain Kitty Corner. Kitty Corner is my way of )}having you specify a rectangle for me to do something to. When Kitty Corner is mentioned, here's what you do: move th)}e blinking cursor to one corner of the rectangle and press the button. Then move the cursor to the diagonally opposite ) }(how about diametrically disinclined) corner and again press the button. In some cases you may need to do this again)!} for a second rectangle. Box outline: Kitty Corner a rec- tangle and the rectangle will be outlined using the current b)"}rush pattern on the pc.B - Filled box Draws a solidly filled area colored in the pc. use Kitty Corner to denote your)#} rectangle.C - Circle C also uses Kitty Corner. The first point will be the center of the circle, the second will be o)$}n the circumfrence. The circle will be drawn using the current brush and the pc. Note: the circle is only circular on)%} the screen! The actual height/width ratio is 100/57.I - Pixel increment Specify a Kitty Corner, and the computer will)&} add 1 to every pixel color value in the rectangle. Note: Pixel incrementing the same box four times will return it to)'} it's original condition.R - Repeat last fill R is used in conjunction with both D (designer fill) and F (flood fill).)(} R uses the same Line Buffer data for another pattern or color. It can be used to restore an erroneous fill to its las))}t color.X - Expand Gr.7 This is useful only to expand some pictures saved in Gr.7 format. X enlarges the top half of t)*}he screen to full size.A - Alternating fill A will prompt you for entry of two colors. It will then repeatedly do a )+}flood fill at the present cursor location with each color you specified in rapid succesion. Stop it by pressing any key),}. Note: this has the same rules as the flood fill for complex areas.E - Exchange colors E asks you for the old color, )-}then needs a Kitty Corner. E will check each pixel in the box to see if it is the same as the old color, if so, It wi).}ll change the pixel to the pc.<> - Change brushes Either < or > will change your brush pattern. The brushes are 9x9 arra)/}ys of a pattern, which is used quite frequently throughout the program. To change the shape of a brush, press 'M' at )0}the main menu screen+ - Expand/Contract + will take a rectangle of any (KISS, keep it small, stupid) size and expand o)1}r contract it to fit any other sized rectangle. Use two Kitty Corners to specify the two rectangles.= - Block copy D)2}enote a Kitty Cornered rectangle and an UPPER LEFT corner of the destination area. A equalivalently sized copy will be )3}transferred to the end zone.$ - About the author: This is me. Sean M. Puckett 693 n.w. 11 st. Add text to your screens (Roman, Script, Old English, Sans Serif) in any color and size!!)6} coming soon from Conceptual Imagery(5"SMART ART II" by Sean Puckett.(S*P*A*C*E Enhanced Version 5/86)(NOTE: These instructions have been updated from the aut-8}hor's original 12/30/84 version.) So. You are a bit confused about Smart Art II. Understandable, being acomplex drawing-9} package, there are many things to adjust to. If you have beenusing Micro Illustrator or MicroPainter or any of the other d-:}rawing packagesout there in the commercial world, and if you are new to computer art, a wholenew concept of things you cou-;}ld never do with pencil and inks now exists. Before I dive in and start throwing examples and stuff, let me explain some-<}of the benefits and limitations of Smart Art II (here after called "SM2").First, SM2 is written primarily in Basic. This m-=}akes it slow in a few places, most noticeably in the cursor update (a cursor indicates where a change is tobe made next). T->}hat is really the only disadvantage I can think of (heh heh).Okay... If you are familiar with other Atari drawing packages,-?} read this nextparagraph. If not, read it anyway! The way SM2 stores pictures on your disk is nearly the same as Micro-@}Painterdoes. This is the "Unpacked" format (my quotes). Micro Illustrator (same asKoala, Atari Artist, and the light pen-A} package) store the picture in a"Compressed" format which takes up less space on the disk. If you wish to useyour SM2 pict-B}ures with these packages - no can do! The converse works though. Both "compressed" Micro Illustrator and normal MicroPainter-C} pictures may now bedirectly loaded into SM2 with all colors properly set as well!! SM2 usesDisplay List Interrupts to al-D}low many more colors on the screen at once thanwith MicroPainter or Graphics 15 (ANTIC mode E) which allows only 4. If you-E}have ever looked at the directory of a disk with these pictures on it, youprobably noticed that they all were 62 sectors -F}long. SM2 pictures are = 66sectors long, the added length to allow for storage of the additional colorinformation. Now,-G} about Controllers (ie; joystick, touch pad, light pens, mouse, etc...),SM2 in it's original form supports only joystick con-H}trollers (port #1, please). However, by RUNning the SMARTTAB file, you can create a file called SM.OVL.When merged with SMA-I}RTART.V15 (the main program); use of your touch pad (Koalaor Atari TTablet. NOT Powerpad, tho) is allowed for all functions -J}except for"Modify Brush", which still requires a Joystick. I suggest that you Calibrateyour TTablet (Short for "Touch Tabl-K}et") to rest in joystick port #2 and keep ajoystick in port #1. This may be fixed sometime, but no guarantees! I ampresen-L}tly working on a Light Pen interface for SM2 (won't that be funky!)but as yet (12/30/84) have not ordered a Pen yet. We shal-M}l see. Oh. About theMouse I mentioned. I have built a mouse for the Atari Computers and have beenshowing it around. It has -N}generated quite a bit of interest! Now, advantages of SM2 (I like this part!). DIsplay list interrupt for colormixing vert-O}ically. You can change the color of any "Paint pot" at any line onthe screen. Well, every other line. So, you can have a bac-P}kground made up of ashaded blue sky, going from white into a deep blue, a grassy backgroundblending into a dirt path, all w-Q}ith one "color" and still have 3 other "pots"to play with! You like? The main menu has an option called "Modify Brush" tha-R}t allows you to changethe "stamp" of the cursor. So, when you press the button, the cursor STAMPsdown and leaves an image o-S}f itself in the picture. Speaking of color, youselect the color of your stamp by pressing 1, 2, 3 or 4; each numbercorrepon-T}ding to a color in the color bars (just beloy the text line in EDITmode). My mother changed some brushes to look like Christ-U}mas tree ornamentsand we STAMPed them down in a treeish pattern in different colors, thenprinted it out on our color printe-V}r for a really nice Xmas card! You have nine brushes to play with, each brush is a 9x9 matrix (i.e. 9 blocksup, 9 blocks a-W}cross). The brushes you create can be saved to disk and loadedback, to alleviate having to recreate them when you begin a ne-X}w session. A LINE mode is provided for, wherin when the activating trigger is pressed,a line formed from the brush shape i-Y}s drawn (albeit slowly) from the endpointof the last line or point plotted. (ed note: upon rereading of this, it seemsI hav-Z}e slipped into a tutorial! oh. also, at the main menu press "E" to getinto the Edit mode (no duh)) An option exists to move -[}the beginning endpointof the line to another spot without drawing over other stuff. Some basic geometric shapes are progra-\}mmed in, the CIRCLE, BOX OUTLINE, andthe RECTANGLE. The function of these is kinda obvious, except for how we tellSM2 where-]} to draw it and how big to make it. To explain this in greaterdetail, let me begin a new paragraph: Here we are! Well, whe-^}n you select (for example) the rectangle function, SM2will ask first for a center point for the circle, and then for any poi-_}nt onit's circumference. When SM2 wants a point from you, the cursor becomes atarget sight shape and flashes rapidly (this -`}is new to you CISers!) Move thecursor to the place where you want that point to be and press the trigger. Thisis known as a-a} POINT. Two points are called a Kitty Corner for reasons thatwill soon become obvious. Press the B function for rectangle (l-b}ike that? B forrectangle? Means BOX! gotcha! hehehe) SM2 will ask for a corner of the boxand then for the opposite across (-c}diametricaly disinclined? KittyCorner!) corner of the box. This taking all the space between the two pointsand fill it up w-d}ith your solid color. The BOX OUTLINE function "O" places theperimiter of the box between the two points, not the solid box.-e} Circle is somewhat different. The first point will be the center of thecircle, and the second point will be on the circu-f}mfrence. A circle in SM2, whenplotted, looks almost precisly circular. But watchout! The actual ratioof height/width is 100-g}/57! This can mess you up if you are doing draftingwork or whatever. There is no disk, or filled circle function for reasons-q}BŠb%DOS SYSb*9DUP SYSb cRAMDISK COMblAUTORUN SYSbmMENU bl{SMARTARTV15bSM CDEb TITL SETbSM SETb/SMHELP DOCbV7SMARTARTDOCBBRUSHES bSMARTTAB b0PENCONVR b2FRACTAL OBJbFWALOAD bG)TURBO FWAb pSMLOADER bB}SPACEPIC b SPACE51 DOC ofspace and etc... Speaking of drafting, the "-" function will give you the distance in pixels(the smallest dot) from th-r}e last point you plotted to the current cursorposition. If you wanted to mark 17 dots to the left, you would not need tocou-s}nt them out, just estimate and press "-". Then you can adjust to get itexact. This makes SM2 especially suited for Graph wor-t}k! On to the neat stuff. We have a few goodies here in the fill department:Floodfill, Design fill, Repeat last fill, and A-u}lternating fill; allselected by their capital letter. Floodfill is the standard fill routine witha twist: it remembers the -v}shape of the area it filled, after it fills it.Every horizontal line it fills is stored in memory, for use with theDesigner-w} or Repeat fill functions. Do this: Build a circle on the screen incolor 2 (press 2, then C for circle. put the first point -x}in the middle of thescreen, and the second about 3/4 the way up from the bottom). Make sure thecursor is inside the circle -y}before you start filling! Now. Press 3 and F. SM2will switch to color 3 and fill the circle with it (the fill is slow becaus-z}eof the storing of the lines, the DLIs in the background, and the highresolution mode the screen is in). Wasn't that neat? -{}Not impressed? Well,we'll see 'bout that! Press 4 for color 4, R for repeat fill (we will not filla new area, but use the s-|}tored pattern from the floodfill we just did to drawa pattern OVER the filled area) and 5. The character after the 5 is any-}}Atascii key from 32 to 95. Each valid key has it's own pattern assigned to it.The numbers from 1 to 9 approximate a tone sca-~}le you can use to mix colorswith. 5 is a 50%/50% mix of the NEW color (color 4) and the old background(color 3 in this case-}). The result should be a checkered pattern inside thecircle. You can choose different colors and different patterns by pres-}sing thecolor number (if you wish to change it), then R (Repeat last fill) and thepattern key. If you want to explore all t-}he patterns, feel free; there are 64different ones! On the other hand, if you want to change them, or just lookat them all -}at once, just use your favorite character set editor (make sureit can handle GRAPHICS 1 & 2 character sets. I personally lov-}e "The Next Step"from On-line, but most any will do). Just load the file SM.SET and there it is! Designer fill takes that -}idea one step farther. In one swell foop, it 1:does a floodfill on the area you indicate with a color different than thebac-}kground (this is to find the extent of that area), Repeat fills it withit's original color solid (restore the area to the wa-}y it was before thefloodfill), and Repeat fills again with the correct color and pattern key.Whew! Complicated, eh? Try a f-}ew small circles or box outlines and see how itdoes the job! Alternating fill is a solution to a problem I was having with-} MicroPainter:What if you want to fill over a patterned area? MicroPainter doesn'tunderstand that the pattern is actually a-} pattern, just looks like a series ofvery small areas to fill. Well, the solution is here. Alternating fill willalternatly -}fill an area with 2 colors. This will quickly eat away most simplepatterns, and a combination of several different Alternati-}ng fills will clearaway even the toughest patterns! When the Alternating fill has done enough, just tap the space bar and it-} will quit when the fill finishes. Beware, though! An Alternating fill can get out of hand! if left unchecked is will destroy-}your drawing as quickly as it erases a pattern, so beware! A few caveats about the fill software exists. If the area you t-}ry to storeinto memory is too big, the program will do one of three things depending onwhat fill you were in at the time: F-}loodfill, it will stop dead, so you canerase it with Repeat fill, or continue by doing other floodfills. Alternatingfill, c-}ontinue. It assumes that you want to clean up the area anyway, so itchugs along. Designer fill, will stop, erase any changes-} it made, restoringthe screen to where it was before the fill started. Also, if the fill's stackspace gets too crowded the -}screen display will crash. This is remedied bypressing ESC and entering the EDIT mode again. Just remember to break upcompl-}icated fills into smaller pieces, by putting small blocks in the way orwhatever.
