The file format is identical on the 8-bit Atari, the ST,IBM's, etc. Because of the limited memory resource%z}s of the 8-bit Atari,ARC.COM is a limited version of the ARC used on the ST. ARC.COM only usesthree of the four compressio%{}n methods normally used in ARC. The "crunched"method requires a 25K hash table plus additional tables for over 30K ofconti%|}nuous buffer space. It was not feasable to implement it on the 8-bitAtari. ARC.COM does generate ".ARC" files that are ful%}}ly compatable with othercomputers such as the ST. ARCX.COM is used to extract files from an ".ARC"file. Before you r%~}un ARC.COM, you must remove all cartridges (hold Option downif booting an XL/XE). You should do a directory of the disk con%}taining thefiles you want to ARC and write down their names exactly. Now load ARC.COMfrom DOS. First, enter the name of t%}he ".ARC" file you want to create. You donot need to enter the extension as ".ARC" is added automatically. You shouldente%}r the drive number as in Dn:filename. Next, you will be asked for afilename to ARC. Enter the full filename including the %}drive(Dn:filename.ext). Now you will be asked if you want the screen turned off --answering yes will blank the screen and %}speed up the process about 20%. WhenARC finishes with that file, it will turn on the screen and ask you for anotherfilenam%}e. If you have no more files to add, press RETURN. ARC.COM will nowclose the ".ARC" file and ask you for another ".ARC" fi%}le to create. PressRETURN if you are done and you will be returned to DOS. ARC.COM tries to do as much work as possib%}le in memory. It takes twopasses to ARC a file. If the file is under 17K, ARC will read the entire filein and do all the %}processing in memory. This means that ARC can spend quite awhile working with no disk activity. The important thing is not%} to panic. Theoutput buffer size is determined by where your MEMLO is. The less memory DOStakes, the more memory for ARC.%} This will give the false impression that ARCis slower because there will be a longer delay between disk accesses while the%}output buffer fills up. In reality, it is faster to have a larger outputbuffer so that ARC can send the file out as a cont%}inous block. ADVANCED USERS -- If you are using Sparta DOS or DOS XL, you may passparameters on the command line. The%} format is: filename filename.extfilename.ext etc. You can enter as many filenames as will fit in the 64 bytecommand line.%} The first filename is the ".ARC" file to be created. Thecurrent drive will be used if you don't specify it. All addition%}al files onthe command line will be ARCed and placed within the ".ARC" file. The currentdrive will also be used for these %}files if you don't specify one. The screenwill be turned off until ARC.COM is done; you will then have the opportunity toe%}nter more filenames to add, or to press RETURN to close the ".ARC" file. Ifyou are creating a batch file to ARC files, you %}will not need to answer thequestion of whether to turn the screen off. Simply pass the first filename onthe same line as y%}ou call ARC. Once you have indicated the screen is to beoff, (via passing parameters in a command line, or answering 'Y' to%} theprompt), ARC will no longer ask you if you want the screen off. NOTE: You cannot use wildcards as part of a filena%}me -- no "*" or "?". SYSOPS -- if you have access to an ST, you may want to run 8-bit ".ARC"files through %}the ST ARC.TTP to update the compression method to "crunched".On the command line you get when clicking on ARC.TTP enter: %} C filename *.*This will update all files within the "filename" ".ARC" file. Binary files areusually squeezed and will%} not benefit from this, but Basic and Text files canbe reduced another 10-20%ADVANTAGES OF ARCed files: 1) Ignores %}any characters tacked onto a file when BBS and terminal don'tagree on block padding -- one of the most common causes of bad %}file transfers. 2) Compresses files -- less time is spent uploading/downloading, more roomon a BBS for download files.%} 3) Combines files -- both program and documentation can be in the samefile. 4) Standardization -- ARC format is%} identical on the 8-bit, ST, PCcompatable, etc.DISADVANTAGES OF ARCed files: 1) Both ARC and ARCX are slow -- they %}process files at about 8K a minute. 2) You cannot ARC a DOS.SYS file or a boot disk. LIGHTSPEED C -- ARC.COM and%} ARCX.COM were ported over from the IBM to the8-bit Atari using Lightspeed C, a small C compiler for the 8-bit Atari. Form%}ore information about Lightspeed C, contact Clearstar Softechnologies, 1501Wood Ave. #36, Sumner, WA 98390. %} Ralph Walden, SYSOP ACE BBS (503)343-4352 3/12/24 24 hrs. $z ABOUT ARCX An ARCed file contains one or more files which has been compressed into a)}single file. This reduces the size by an average of 30-50%. ARCX.COM is thenneeded to extract the files from the .ARC fil)}e. ARC files maintain a CRC checkto make certain the file is intact - if ARCX tells you the CRC check was wrong, then the .)}ARC file you are trying to extract from is "probably" bad. This addsanother check to program validity for files downloaded )}using Xmodem. Before running ARCX be sure you have removed all cartridges and Basic isoff (48K is a requirement). Now)} load ARCX.COM from DOS, or type ARCX if youare using Sparta or an OSS DOS. ARCX will then ask you for the name of the.ARC)} file to extract files from. If you don't remember the name, you can get adirectory by pressing the '+' key. After enterin)}g the name of the .ARC file,ARCX will ask you for the drive to send the extracted files to. Next, ARCXwill ask you if you )}want the screen turned off. If you press 'Y', then thescreen will be turned off during the extraction process which will sp)}eed up theprocess about 20%. ARCX will extract all files from the .ARC file and write itto the destination drive. Th)}e algorithms used for extracting .ARC files are quite complex, andtherefore rather slow. A rough estimate is 1 minute for e)}ach 5K of sourcefile. ARCX uses all available memory and buffers the input and output so yourdisk drives won't be running )}all the time. Keep in mind that the extracted files can be more then twice the size ofthe original .ARC file. Be sure)} you have enough room before you start! ARC was originally written in C by Tom Henderson of System EnhancementAssociat)}es. The source code was placed in the public domain allowing for ARCand ARCX to be ported to a wide variety of computers (i)}t was written in C,hence its ability to be ported to other computers). ARCX as implemented in the8-bit version will suppor)}t all .ARC files created with version 5 of ARC. There are a few limitations. ARCX will not supported .ARC files encode)}dwith a password; it will not support a single source file within the .ARC filethat exceeds 64K; and it will not support "c)}runched" files created with apre-version 5 ARC program. It is extremely unlikely that you would encounterany of these limi)}tations. When ARC (not ARCX) compresses a file(s), it tries out 4 different methodsof compression, and selects whichev)}er method yields the smallest file. Thesemethods are referred to as stored, packed, squeezed, and crunched. The methodused)} will be transparent to the user of ARCX which will extract files stored inany of these formats. For the curious, stored is)} as is, i.e., the file was tosmall to be worth compressing. Packed is used when a file has a large numberof repeating byte)}s. Squeezed is the Hufman method, commonly used on largebinary files. Crunched is the Lempel-Zev method and is the most co)}mmonly usedas it gives the best results. At this time, there is no better compressionmethod known. Ral)}ph Walden, SYSOP, ACE BBS (503)343-4352., there is no better compressionmethod known. Ral(7 8-BIT ARCX HELP FILE Some users seem to be having more problems than necessary with theA-}RCX.COM utility in extracting files from the archived format. This is notbecause of necessarily bad files but unfamiliarity-} with the ARCX. ARCX is arelatively simple utility and I think this is where the confusion comes from. When you downl-}oad a file be sure to give it an extender of .ARC toindicate that it is an archived file. ARCX can not extract files from w-}ithin aarchived file if the archived file has the same extender as the file(s) insidethe archive. An example of this is FO-}OTBALL.ARC inside of which is a filenamed FOOTBALL.BAS. Some have given the archived file a name of FOOTBALL.BASand ARCX c-}annot extract from this file since the true filename stored insidethe file is FOOTBALL.BAS. When you load ARCX make su-}re you do not have basic engaged. On an 800remove the BASIC cartridge, on XL/XE models hold down the OPTION key when youbo-}ot up the computer to lock out BASIC. Now that you have your downloaded file named correctly and ARCX bootedARCX is go-}ing to give you a short menu. A "+" would give you a directory ofARC'd files on the disk. ARCX prompts you with a ">" for -}a filename toextract, type it in as in the following example:>Dn:FILENAME.ARC and hit RETURNDestination drive # (Type in-} the drive you wish the file sent to.)Screen off for speed? (Answer either Y or N. Use N to watch extraction.) ARCX -}will now analyze the file and determine which ARC procedure was usedto compress the program, then begin to extract various a-}mounts of bytes andwrite them to your destination drive. DO NOT hit the RETURN key or any otherkey as all the deARC proces-}s will be done automatically by ARCX and then youwill be returned to the menu so you can extract another file or hit RETURN -}toexit to DOS. Only one DOS seems to not be compatible with ARCX, and that is SmartDOS atthis point. I recommend you-} use SpartaDOS or use Atari DOS 2.x as these seemto be the most reliable DOS. I hope this short help file will solve y-}our problems by giving you anexample of how to properly type in the filenames and extenders. Remember toalways give your d-}ownloaded ARChived file the extender of .ARC. If you havedone this then when you give the filename to extract ARCX will def-}ault theextender correctly to .ARC and extract the file(s). If file transfer is taking place of the phone, this can be a costly procedur:}e! The two short programs presnted here will allow any file to be encoded into a compressed form that gen:}erally results in a 35-40% shorter file. This can result in a considerable savings in disk space and transfer time.:} First, though, let me give credit where credit is due! The idea for this program came from an article i:}n BYTE Magazine (May '86) by Johnathan Amsterdam. His clearly written article made it possible to implement the id:}ea on the ATARI. There are five files altogether: - SQUISH.COM The file compression (encoding): } object code - UNSQUI.COM The file decompression (decoding) object code - SQUISH.DOC This doc:!}umentation file - SQUISH.SQU The compressed ACTION! source code for SQUISH.COM - UNSQUI.SQU T:"}he compressed ACTION! source code for UNSQUI.COM The source code is not required in order to use the pro:#}grams, but it is provided for those interested in ACTION! programmimg. It contains some routines that allow recursi:$}on (which is not normally possible in ACTION!). it can also be used to test the decoding program on your system. :%} To encode a file, load SQUISH.COM from DOS (as a binary file). You will be prompted for the 'source file na:&}me'. A certain amount of filename normalisation is done, so, if no device is specified, D1: is assumed. You will th:'}en be prompted for the output filename. If is pressed with no entry, the source filename is used for the d:(}estination, except that a .SQU extender is added. Hence, if the source file is TEXT.TXT, the destination filename would :)}become TEXT.SQU unless another name was specified. The complete file names will then be displayed and a p:*}rompt given to allow you to abort the process (in case you got the filenames wrong or lost the disk, or something!):+}. If is pressed, the coding begins. When the program has finished, it will display:,} the size of the source and coded files for comparison. To decode the file, run UNSQUI.COM (I suggest ren:-}aming it UNSQUISH.COM!) and answer the filename prompts. The same rules apply, except that a default extender of .:.}TXT will be applied if no destination file is given. Output can also be sent to the screen or printer by specifying:/} E: and P: as the destination. I hope these programs will be of use to the ATARI community and that perha:0}ps they will be adopted as a standard, so that much valuable time and money can be saved. :1} ----------ime and money can be saved. 8Crssz''KEUSURSUFILETEMPNAMECMPDIRADJEXTRENDRINETMSGMANNATEMDOTINICHOMACHCHATROLERSPMJPA>3}US >4}>5} JJTHE COMPACTOR DETECTOR Ver 1.0 Written By Roy GoldmanooS*P*A*C*E VERSION >6} Modified By Jim Chapman 1/87, Additions By Marc Ingle 8/88.(2jjBrought to you by The Seattle >7}Puget-Sound Atari Computer Enthusiasts. The pB}rogramas written can detect all of the following compaction programs:Scrunch, Disk Communicator, Shrink, Masher, Boot LeggB}er, Arc, AlfCrunch, Crunch The program is fairly fast and has many options. To run the program bootwith Basic and typB}e RUN "D:PACKDETR.BAS". A title screen will appear and aprompt will ask you to press [START]. After pressing [START] you wB}ill be askedto input the name of the compacted file. Input the name, including the drivenumber (if other than 1) and pressB} [RETURN]. If you forgot the name of thefile, press the number of the drive you want a directory of and press [RETURN].ThiB}s will cause the directory of the drive you chose to be displayed. After selecting the filename the drive will spin forB} a second and thendisplay the compaction method that the Detector has discovered. If theDetector does not recognize the coB}mpaction program you will be notified of youroptions. Otherwise a small menu will appear. On this menu you will be giB}ven the chance to rename the file, lock thefile, unlock the file, quit to basic, quit to DOS, re-run the CompactorDetector,B} or get the directory of the disk. Also, if the filename of theoriginal file does not have to proper extender, i.e. SCR forB} Scrunched files, you will be given the option to automatically rename the file so that it willhave the proper extender. SeB}lect a option by moving the arrow on the screenbeside the option you want to execute. This can be done by using the arrowkB}eys and pressing [RETURN]. Basically that is it. I hope that you enjoy this program and find ituseful. If I missed aB}ny of the compaction programs please let me know. Writeto: S*P*A*C*E B} P.O.
