The MULTIPLEXER is a device (actually a collection of modules) that allow up to8 Ataris to read and write to the sam}e drive (typically a hard disk), printer, and talk to each other. One "master" computer (any 8-bit) is equipped with themas}ter MULTIPLEXER interface. Then up to 8 "slave" computers can hook up to themaster, each having their own slave interface. } The "common" peripherals (thingsthat are to be shared) are connected to the master computer. On each slave, alldisk and p}rinter I/O is routed through the master, so no drives are needed onthem. The master computer can be configured in any manne}r you wish - you canfor example have certain peripherals "local" to the slave - or routed to adifferent number on the maste}r. under development is a BBS system that willmake full use of this device, allowing up to 8 lines/users to be using thesy}stem at the same time! A multiuser chat mode is a feature of this program, however you do not NEED this program to run a BBS} with the MULTIPLEXER (but bewarned that not all BBS programs will run concurrently). All slaves areindependent, and do no}t need to have the same program running on them. Thissystem is excellent for BBS SysOps, because you can be using your hard} disk(s)while still running your BBS uninterrupted! Another example is in a classroomsituation, or anywhere a disk needs t}o be shared by different people. This isan EXCELLENT programming/debugging tool as well! Computer Software Services is pleas}ed to announce two new upgrades for thethe Atari XF-551 drive. The standard upgrade allows use of either the stock5.25" me}chanism OR a 3.5" 720k drive. The deluxe upgrade allows use of BOTHmechanisms at the same time, totally switchless! Here a}re the list of features:1. The main feature of course, is the ability to add a 3.5" drive, and use itin conjunction with t}he 5.25" mech built-in, without having to flip anyswitches. It behaves just like a separate drive, in that you can have ad}ifferent density disk on one mech than the other. 2. The OS has been rewritten, so there is no nasty density bug. Itrecon}figures properly to whatever density disk is being accessed. 3. The Request Status command returns the proper values for th}e different typesof bad sectors, so that more protected software will boot. 4. The SIO routines in the ROM now work proper}ly, and also support true UltraSpeed. (Buggy SIO routines caused Flight Simulator II not to boot. 5. The Ultra Speed inte}rface supports the Custom format command ("f"), so thatdifferent sector interleaves may be used. The XF optimizes the track}-to-trackinterleave, producing the fastest high speed format possible. 6. The format command waits (like it should) for th}e disk to come up to speedbefore formatting. This was a problem under the original Rom. 7. The drive is capable of readin}g IBM and ST disks with a separate utilityprogram. This makes porting files to the 8-bit very quick and easy. 8. It allow}s access of drive 5. This is because the 3.5" drive takes on thedrive number of the dip switch settings +1. The upgrad}es come complete with a high quality SONY 3.5" drive mechanism, but may be ordered without the drive if you already have one.} Call for pricing.Computer Software ServicesP.O Box 17660Rochester, NY 14617(716) 586-5545 BBS: (716) 247-7157}Press RETURN to continue }} The Computer Software Services DATABASE SECTION These are brief descriptions }of someof the products we have developed. Use [?] for Men}u: I This BBS is being run on the following hardware: 2 Atari 800XL 256K computers 2 Avatex 1200 Modems } 2 Bob-Verter RS232 interfaces And the Puff II BBS Software. The system is using the CSS MULTIPLEXER, which allow}s up to 8 computers to share the same hard disk(s) and printer(s). The equiptment on the multiplexer host is an 800XL 64k} computer, a Black Box, and various hard disks. Since we have two telephone lines on this system, two people can be using} the board at the same time, yet running independently from each other. If you see another user online, you may chat wit}h him by entering the Multi-User Chat area of the BBS (K from the main prompt). As of this writing, the Puff BBS is the }only BBS software designed for multi-user operation. Unfortunately it is not yet available. If I just ARC L the file appears to be ok. If I ARCX I g}et an error 137. Looking at the file shows it to be zeros. Danp.s. This error was in Versions 4.17, 4.19, and 4.20.
