First off, the Amiga's biggest problem is incompatibility between machines. The original Amiga, the 1000, is 5}pretty much incompatible with the newermachines (500 and 2000). This is both hardware-wise (expansion ports aredifferent), 6} and often times, software wise. The operating system is stillon disk for many people. The A500 has a really poor power su 7}pply. However, the 2000 is a nice machine, and has room for expansion cards. The STs are pretty much compatible with each 8}other. Also, you have theOS in ROM. However, this is a benefit for some, hinderance for others. The desktop is better than 9} the Amiga (IMHO). However, the ST isn'thorribly easy to expand, and the number of motherboard revisions justads to the pr :}oblem of expansions. Also, the ST doesn't have quite theamount of support that the Amiga has. If you have a large amount ;}of money to spend (like $2000), get theA-2000. It's really a nice machine. However, don't waste your moneyon the lousy A5 <}00. If you don't want to spend that amount of money, get the 1040ST or 1040STe, or maybe even a Mega 2. =cf=[451-563/+] =}Command [? for Help] >N}Msg #0540 Date:01/25/91 Time:23:43From: CHRIS FREEMESSERTo: SYSOP RONSubject: ST vs. Amiga (M >}sg #0538)The problem with asking "which is better" is that these conversationsoften end up becoming stupid, pointless wars ?} between the two. I only got one repl ^}y, and that reply was perfectly civilized. It was not amindless "war" between the two. It was a reasonble, honest answer. _} There hadn't been the slightest suggestion that it had broken down intomindlessness. The most mindless message there was `}the SysOp's!! I've seen them call a user, es b}sentially, "stupid" for not understanding the wayone of their manuals explained something. And I've seen other, worse, thi c}ngs, although I can't recall any examples justnow. You guys have been immensely "cool." I mean, here I was, praising the d}MIO andtrying to tear down the BB, and yet you guys tolerated me! You even made somegreat offers to prove yourselves, inst e}ead of just telling me to "get off theboard." I wish EVERY product support was likes yours. And I don't mean just compu f}terseither. My reasoning is that we both are SUPPORT boards... ICD'sdeals with both Amiga and S {}T and we deal with neither... which suggests thathe's a bit less likely to get a biased opinion than by calling a strictly S |}T orstrictly Amiga board. True, the users on either board may be a bit biased on anindividule basis but I think the overall }} replys will show a somewhat lessslanted view than if you went to a strictly ST board for example.
