From: Subject: Re: Connecting a SCSI ZIP drive to the Black Box, Date: יום רביעי 15 מרץ 2000 23:59 Hi Nir, I just got my zip connected to my new BB just about three weeks ago now, so I'm probably the resident newbie around here. Here's the basics for an external scsi zip drive: 1. You need a parity pal chip added to your BB. CSS will do it for you, just give 'em a call. 2. You need an adapter to connect 50-pin flat ribbon cable header to a 25 pin SCSI port on the back of the zip. I pressed a 50 pin centronics scsi header onto the ribbon cable and a plugged a centronics-to-25-pin adapter into that. Its kind of goofy, but I had these parts laying around, and it works fine. 3. Termination should be selected to ON if its the last drive on the chain. 4. To save the settings of the BB, you need a SCSI device having id #0. All the external zips I've seen won't do this, so I added a SyQuest Ezflyer removable drive which can be set to id #0 (Syquest went chapter 11 recently and you can get these drives for almost nothing). This works really well because the BB can save different sets of partition tables to each removeable cartridge you have. You can also do partition to partition backups with CSS's HD Backup Pro software. I've heard from others that an internal zip can be set to id #0, so you probably don't need a second drive if you plan to go with the internal model. Overall I couldn't be happier now with my 130XE & BB. It is astounding how fast the I/O is out of the BB. Most applications and games load practically instantaneously. here's some pictures of my setup if you are interested: http://www.halcyon.com/danver/images/atari.jpg http://www.halcyon.com/danver/images/bb.jpg -Dan V.
