You will need the full range of } your Character Types in order to live life to the fullest.YOUR GOAL in LIFESPAN is to discover through Experience those Ch}aracter Types glimpsed in childhood but lost in the transition to adulthood. To accomplish this goal you must pursue Opportu}nities, deal with Situations, enter Conversations, and wrestle with Doubts, Worries and Fears while grasping at Hopes. You wi}ll have to encounter many Experiences in order to survive enough of them to discover the Character Types they can bring out i}n you. You will do this against a clock of decreasing years. YOUR REWARD, if you are successful in discovering your Charac}ter Range before your time runs out, will be that your LIFESPAN will end with a Hypnotically beautiful Light and Sound Show b}uilt from the experiences of your past life. The more years ahead of you when you reach success, the longer this Show will be}.NOTE: If you want to start playing LIFESPAN without knowing all the details of the game, read the sections titled "How to }Play." However, to understand fully what is happening on your screen -- AND WHY -- read also the sections titled "Understand}ing LIFESPAN"Loading the Game:1) Turn on your disk drive and monitor.2) Insert side #1 of the LIFESPAN disk into the }How to PlayAs in real life, you don't really have to do anything while being born. However, you can participate in the Spi}ral's music by moving the joystick in different directions and pressing the joystick button. CHILDHOOD -- GAME #2Underst}anding LIFESPANA playpen forms itself on your screen, complete with a stack of 10 children's building blocks in the lower l}eft corner. Although you may find yourself to be clumsy at this stage of your life, your job here is to select the Character} with which you wish to begin your adult life by trapping the other four in the corners of your playpen. You must trap one i}n each corner over a cross and touching both walls. The more successful you are at this, the sooner you will become purposef}ul in your adult life. This increases the number of years available to you for becoming a complete and whole Character. } Trap 4 -- For a Lifespan of 93-99 Years. Trap 3 -- For a Lifespan of 81-92 Years. Trap 2 -- For a Lifespan} of 69-80 Years. Trap 1 -- For a Lifespan of 57-68 Years. Trap 0 -- For a Lifespan of 45-56 Years.Your period } of childhood draws to a close as you notice the changing colors outside of your playpen, making you aware of the uncertainty!} of life outside of your enclosed world. This undermines your sense of security and causes your world to grow darker and col"}der as you enter adulthood. How to PlayWith your cursor (in the shape of an L, I, F or E), pick up building blocks and tr#}y to trap each Character Type into the corners of the playpen. Move the cursor with your joystick. To pick up or release a $}block, press the joystick button when you are directly above or below a block. The five Character Types will be deflected by%} blocks in their path. Attached to the cursor, a block can be used as a paddle. Use one or several blocks to trap a Charact&}er Type into a corner, making sure that it is over the cross and touching both walls. Then, move on to the others, trapping '}as many as you can before time runs out. is over the cross and touching both walls. Then, move on to the others, trapping *OPPORTUNITY GATES -- GAME #3Adulthood -- the real game begins.Understanding LIFESPANIn the adulthood portion of LIFESPA)}N, you must make four successful passes through three subsequent game segments in your effort to rediscover and collect all f*}ive of the Character Types which you glimpsed in childhood. As an adult, you are now beginning your search for the right Opp+}ortunities in life.In Game #3, you find yourself in a cold and dark environment in which Opportunities appear as small poin,}ts of light. The Character Type with which you emerge from childhood is either the one which you have successfully selected -}by trapping the four others in your childhood, or it is one of the five randomly selected for you by the game. It is the one.} with which you must begin your journey and is called your Travel Character or Traveller. Most of the Opportunities that you/} can see are intended for others; only a few are meant for you. Try to locate an appropriate Opportunity and dive into it.0}How to PlayIn your search through darkness for the right Opportunity, you can accelerate by pushing forward on the joystick1} while pressing the button. To slow down, pull back on the joystick while pressing the button. The best Opportunities are t2}hose which are identical to your Traveller in BOTH shape and color. Opportunities corresponding to your Traveller in ONLY sh3}ape or color are not as good. If there is NO correspondence between the Opportunity and your Traveller, life will be most di4}fficult for you in Game #4 (for details see Game #4).To locate and enter a good Opportunity, you must understand the elemen5}ts in the console panel located beneath the window. To the extreme left is your Traveller, the Character Type with which you6} begin your adult life. To the right of this are three empty boxes. As you discover your Character range, each new Characte7}r will appear in one of these empty boxes, and together constitute your Traveller. The next section is your health gauge. Wh8}enever your health is damaged, the white indicator begins to fall. When it reaches the bottom, you lose a year of your life 9}and the indicator again becomes totally white. begins to fall. When it reaches the bottom, you lose a year of your life 2To the right of the health gauge is the Portal Sensor, letting you know when an Opportunity is available to you and what Cha ;}racter Type it is most open to in you. As you travel through time, Opportunities in the form of colored shapes will appear i <}n the Portal Sensor. You are searching for Opportunities that most resemble the color and/or shape of your Traveller -- alth =}ough any Opportunity may turn out to be good. If you have collected more than one Character Type, your chance of encounterin >}g a good Opportunity increases, because any shape and color which you have collected can be considered COMBINED TOGETHER.To ?} the far right of your screen is your age indicator. As you search for Opportunities, years tick away. Speeding up may help @} you to encounter more Opportunities, but this may also make it more difficult to stop for an Opportunity before it disappear A}s from the Portal Sensor. You can't go back for a missed Opportunity. You can wait for the perfect Opportunity and watch t B}he years go by, or try to make the most of a compromise. When you come to a halt, the noise of your travelling ceases, and y C}ou are able to hear the sounds of space around you. If you have stopped in time (i.e., a colored shape is in the Portal Sens D}or), one of the Opportunity Lights will open up as you glide to a halt in front of it. When it reaches full size, the Opport E}unity will rotate displaying a fluctuating Portal in its centre. To confront the Opportunity, move your joystick around and F} you will appear as an astronaut floating in space near it. Note that you will appear to be weightless due to the lack of gr G}avity between Opportunities. You are grasping for the Opportunity but, in order to take advantage of it, you must centre you H}rself over its Portal at its widest opening and dive into it by pressing the joystick button. If you are successful, the Opp I}ortunity leads you into Situations and Conversations, the next stage of LIFESPAN. The likelihood of a successful entry depen J}ds on how well you position yourself in the Portal opening. The speed of aging may be affected because of poor alignment or K}a mismatched shape. Be wary of the Opportunity changing shape when you attempt to enter -- hitting the walls will damage you L}r health and may prevent you from entering the Gate.If you do not gain entry through the Opportunity Portal on your first a M}ttempt, you may continue to try as it rotates. If you would rather not try again, press the joystick button twice to hyper-t N}ravel to another time and place. There is a penalty, however, for this impatience -- one year is subtracted from your LIFESP O}AN clock.Upon successfully entering an Opportunity, you automatically proceed to Situations and Conversations.your LIFESP rSITUATIONS AND CONVERSATIONS -- GAME #4Understanding LIFESPANHaving entered an Opportunity, you now find yourself at a pQ}arty. You are on the edge of a grid densely populated with tiny creatures busily moving about. A stranger in this new SituaR}tion, your objective is to become interesting and similar in appearance to the creatures so as to be accepted into a ConversaS}tion with them.Observe how three or more tiny creatures often stop to enter into Conversations with one another. ConnectinT}g lines link the talking creatures until they go their own separate ways. Just be sure that you don't enter a Conversation bU}efore becoming interesting or you'll be rejected and zapped to the grid's edge, causing you to lose a year of your life. RejV}ection, after you have worked hard to fit in with others, can be very damaging to your health. How to PlayThe goal of GameW} #4 is to enter a Conversation and be accepted. The only way to do this, however, is by becoming interesting, and this meansX} -- just like the creatures in appearance -- glittering. You are the little figure at the edge of the grid. To become glitteY}ring, you must circulate, - travel the grid and touch the colored Common Interest Squares that light up intermittently all ovZ}er it. (They are made of the same stuff as the Conversations and so give you something to talk about.) Move yourself to a S[}quare and press the joystick button to benefit from it before it disappears. The more Common Interest Squares you absorb, th\}e more like the other inhabitants you will become. If you entered an ideal Opportunity in the previous game segment, you'll ]}have to feed on fewer Squares to become totally glittering:ntered an ideal Opportunity in the previous game segment, you'll < * If your Traveller matched the Opportunity in both shape AND color, you need only touch one Common Interest Square. *_} If your Traveller matched the Opportunity in shape OR color, you need to touch three Common Interest Squares. * If your`} Traveller did NOT match the Opportunity at all, you must touch six Common Interest Squares. After becoming totally glitteria}ng, a wavering musical sound indicates that you're ready to enter a Conversation. Don't wait too long to enter a Conversatiob}n, because your Common Interests start to fade after awhile as the party Conversations move onto new subjects. If the waveric}ng music stops, feed upon more Squares until the music returns.Try to avoid the tiny creatures if you can because they cared} only for themselves and will walk all over you if you get in their way, hurting you each time they do so. Your health will e}suffer, causing you to become more and more sluggish until you can hardly move at all. The effect does wear off, however, buf}t the more slowly you move, the more difficult it is to keep away from them.To enter a Conversation, move across one of theg} lines of a Conversation and position yourself right in the middle. Push the joystick button when you're ready to begin "talkh}ing" and try not to get hit by a Conversation line or creature. The sound of the Conversation increases because you are in ii}t. If a creature or a line of the Conversation touches you before you are accepted, you will be zapped to the edge of the grj}id. You will then have to begin a new quest for Common Interests. ted, you will be zapped to the edge of the grPYou can adjust your position while in a Conversation. But if you are able to "talk" without interruption for about three secl}onds, the lines of Conversation between the other beings will die away and focus instead on you, connecting you to each of yom}ur fellow creatures. This is your ultimate goal in Game #4. Accomplishing this leads directly to Experience.EXPERIENCE Cn}ORRIDOR -- GAME #5Understanding LIFESPANYou now begin the most hectic part of your journey -- in the enticingly beautifulo} but extremely dangerous Experience Corridor. Be especially careful here -- regardless of your age or health, it is easy to p}get yourself killed by the Doubts, Worries and Fears which you will encounter. How to PlayYou are naked and falling thoughq} Experience. All you have to do is keep body and soul together for as long as it lasts.Control yourself with your joystickr} as you hurtle through the Corridor at lightning speed. Watch out for the dark Doubts, Worries and Fears that ricochet off ts}he walls and threaten to destroy you in a head-on collision. Each time one of these dark enemies hits you, its decaying effet}ct causes you to derez a little, and your health is affected. Just being in the Experience Corridor is a strain and causes yu}ou to dissolve slowly and derez.nd your health is affected. Just being in the Experience Corridor is a strain and causes y"Hope and the ability to move about quickly are the only things that can keep you alive. The big, bright, slower-moving lighw}ts represent Hope. Touching a Hope is regenerating and rerezes you a little. Every now and then the lights go out and the Dx}oubts, Worries, Fears and Hope are all white. Their hectic display harrasses you as you anxiously await the return of the liy}ght of day.Sensitivity to Experience will increase as a player's Character Range grows, and the vulnerability this brings wz}ith it will make the Experience Corridor more and more dangerous. The Experience Corridor is long and difficult. A gauge at{} the top of your screen shows you how far you've gone and how much distance you've got ahead of you. If you are able to cope|} with this experience and retain some part of yourself intact, you will be rewarded in two ways:(1) You will discover an}}other side to your Character and this new Character will be added to your Character Range display. In this way you will be a~}ble to increase your ability to match the forms and colors of the Opportunities coming your way and so make the most of more }of them.Your ability to adjust to and benefit from a widening spectrum of Opportunities will be the maturity that increases} as the years ahead decrease.(2) You will catch a glimpse of Lifespan's reward and why you are working so hard to discov}er all sides of your Character. These insights will lack the color of the real Finale, but they will increase in length as y}ou become richer in Character. These insights will lack the color of the real Finale, but they will increase in length as y!FINALEIf you are able to collect all five Character Types, your entire life will flash before your eyes in a spectacular L }ight and Sound Show. After this, a number will appear on your screen, showing you how many years you had left to live.
