One day, when you are leafing through some old flight books before }taking them to the pawnshop, the phone rings. When you pick it up, a man excitedly asks for Ace Malarky. When you say that th }at's you, he tells you to go down to the interplanetary spaceport. There, they hire you to take a load of incredibly rare fue!}l to Starbase Omega, in the heart of the Unicorn Nebula. In return, you will get enough money to live comfortably for the res"}t of your life. Note that this game must be played in UPPER CASE! Several options depend on upper case entry. When you #}first run the game, you will be asked if you would like to begin a new game or restore an old one. Since this is your first t$}rip into the dark recesses of the Unicorn Nebula, press 1 for "Begin a new game". Then you will be asked if you want to view %}the instructions. They say basically the same as this article. If you can't wait to get started, skip the rest of this articl&}e and read those. Now you will be asked to make your initial purchases. You have only 700 marks-the standard interplanetary'} currency. Buy wisely!Engine- This is to buy a new engine for your ship, the Flying Maiden. The old one burnt out, and unti(}l now you haven't needed to buy a new one. The cheapest engine is a lowly Jontuk IV- a mere two hundred marks. The best is a )}Helios Superior- three hundred marks. The more expensive the engine is, the faster you will move.Bullets- these are energy*} cartridges for your handy Proton Rifle. Very helpful if you are attacked by aliens or need to hunt for your food.Food- sta+}ndard space rations. Make sure you have enough to survive long enough to find game. Starvation is a nasty way to go.Clothin,}g- these are insulated suits for nearing the sub-zero temperatures of blackholes. Without these, you will freeze to death.M-}iscellaneous Supplies- these are all of the items necessary for survival that don't fit into one of the above catagories. Med.}ical supplies, spare parts for the Flying Maiden, and so on. Very important if you want to avoid doctor's charges or make it /}all the way to Starbase Omega.After you make your purchases you will be asked to select your skill level from a menu. The b0}etter you claim to be with a gun, the quicker you have to be to successfully use your Proton Rifle.Finally, after all of th1}ese decisions have been made, it is time to start on your voyage to the Starbase. At occasional stops on the trail, you may p2}erform any one of a variety of actions-1) Keep Going This enables you to continue on your way to the Starbase. Useful i3}f you have enough food and you just want to make if to Omega.2)Stop at a Base This enables you to stop at a starbase al4}ong the way. This is where you can buy additional supplies. Useful if you run out of supplies, especially if you run out of b5}ullets.3) Go hunting This enables you to make planetfall and go hunting. It is a great way to save money on food, so yo6}u can buy more of other supplies. Be warned, however. You make no progress towards the Starbase when you go hunting, and if y7}ou don't deliver the fuel fast enough, millions may die. Your gun is used in this way...when you decide to go hunting, yo8}u will be asked to type in a word that sounds like your Proton rifle going off (ZAP, WHAM, etc.) You have to type in this wor9}d as quickly as you can. The better you claimed to be when you selected your skill level, the faster you have to type.4) Sa:}ve Game If you select this option, you will be asked for a letter to save the game under (A-Z). You will need to remember;} this number if you want to restore the game later. After the game is saved, the program ends.5) View the instructions <}This enables you to view the on-line instuctions for the game. There is just enough available on-line for a quick brush-up.
