Otherwise, some of your fill routines may spill over into areas you hadn't planned on. Also, NEVER fill aM}n area with black (R0,G0,B0) without first outlining the area to be filled or you may erase beyond your desired area.MAKE YN}OURSELF A COLOR CHARTYou can make a great reference chart by drawing some filled boxes (4 pixels by 12 pixels) using the folO}lowing combinations:R1 R5 R10 R15 R1 R5 R10 R15G1 G1 G1 G1 G1 GP}1 G1 G1B1 B1 B1 B1 B10 B10 B10 B10R1 R5 R10 R15 R1 R5Q} R10 R15G5 G5 G5 G5 G5 G5 G5 G5B1 B1 B1 B1 B10 B10 R} B10 B10R1 R5 R10 R15 R1 R5 R10 R15G10 G10 G10 G10 G10 G10 S} G10 G10B1 B1 B1 B1 B10 B10 B10 B10R1 R5 R10 R15 R1 R5 T} R10 R15G15 G15 G15 G15 G15 G15 G15 G15B1 B1 B1 B1 B10 B10 U} B10 B10R1 R5 R10 R15 R1 R5 R10 R15G15 G15 G15 G15 G15 G15 V} G15 G15B5 B5 B5 B5 B15 B15 B15 B15R1 R5 R10 R15 R1 R5 W} R10 R15G10 G10 G10 G10 G10 G10 G10 G10B5 B5 B5 B5 B15 B15 X} B15 B15R1 R5 R10 R15 R1 R5 R10 R15G5 G5 G5 G5 G5 G5 Y} G5 G5B5 B5 B5 B5 B15 B15 B15 B15R1 R5 R10 R15 R1 R5 Z} R10 R15G1 G1 G1 G1 G1 G1 G1 G1B5 B5 B5 B5 B15 B15 B[}15 B15You can interpolate between these colors for more subtle shades. After you have made a color chart screen you c\}an either make a photograph of your screen with the shutter open for a couple of seconds. PittmanRGBPAINT came as a result of my need for a drawing program to take advantage of g}Jeff Potter's Colorview program to display 4096 colors on the 8-bit Atari. This is truly a case of necessity being the motheq}?BDOS SYSB(!DUP SYSBXIAUTORUN SYSBAUTORUN CPBBKCOLOR INFB^HELP SCNB>fRGBPAINTTXTBRGBPAINTCTBB+WCOLVW26 COMBHCOLVW26 DOCr of invention as I make no claims to being a proficient programmer. But, as no one else has come out with such a program tor} my knowledge, here is my attempt to do so. This is not very user-friendly, but the instructions here may help. Just experis}ment with the controls first on a picture you can afford some mistakes on. It is my hope that some good programmer will be st}o annoyed by my efforts that an improved version of this will come out.RGBPAINT was written in Turbo-Basic and compiled foru} added speed. It runs under MYDOS with the ramdisk selected as drive 1. This is to take advantage of the fast I/O necessaryv} to load and save each of the three screens which are drawn sequentially. It could run technically from a regular disk drivew} but the waiting between screens would probably drive you nuts! I'm not sure if there is enough memory in a regular 64K Atarx}i to keep the three screens in memory and all the program routines too, but if there is a programmer out there who would likey} to take a stab at it, I would be glad to upload the regular Turbo-Basic program so it could be modified to run more efficienz}tly. As written, I'm sure it is a nightmare of inefficient memory use. But it works for my purposes and should work for you{} if your XL or XE has sufficient ramdisk space.Essentially, the program draws the red, green, and blue screens sequentially|} with the selected tools and colors using the joystick in port 1 and also with keyboard commands. To work properly, the ramd}}isk should contain the RUNTIME.COM Turbo-Basic program, my AUTORUN.CTB program, the help screen HELP.SCN, and Jeff Potter's C~}OLRVW24.OBJ with CLRVREGS.DAT file. Then, your ramdisk should have enough room left for three 62-sector screens. For some r}eason, (maybe it's that MYDOS is not completely compatible with Turbo-Basic's disk access routines), my ramdisk on a 320K upg}raded Atari cannot be completely accessed but there is enough room for the above mentioned files with the three picture files} too. I simply put them in the RAMDISK: file in MYDOS which is loaded upon booting up. Then I select "S" from the MYDOS men}u, assign drive 1 as the ramdisk file, binary load RUNTIME.COM, and you're all set. After the program starts, you're asked i}f you're working on a new file or an old file. If you select new, then follow the prompt with a filename (no device #, 1 is }assumed, and no extenders because the .R, .G, .B extenders are automatically attached.) If the file is an old one you have b}een previously working on, it must be in the ramdisk before you start the program.A directory listing follows that will sho}w you all files on your ramdisk.Following the screen prompt to press SELECT will take you to the color select screen. Prin}t out the COLOR.INF file for a reference chart which will help you in selecting colors. After selecting a color, press START} to lock in your color selection. You will then be transferred to the drawing screens. You are actually drawing in shades o}f grey. Whenever you want to view what you are working on in color, press START while in the drawing mode. This will immedi}ately run Jeff Potter's COLORVIEW program. Make the TV or monitor adjustments the program requires and load your picture fro}m the ramdisk. After you exit COLORVIEW, you must reload RUNTIME.COM from MYDOS to get back to RGBPAINT.Now, to briefly ru}n through the commands while in drawing mode:ESTABLISH POINT: Press the period key, ".", to establish the new x,y coordinat}es without plotting the point (reference point). This is helpful for establishing the center of a circle, corner of a box, b}eginning of a drawto, or beginning of text without actually plotting the point to the screen. The arrow keys (unshifted) wil}l move the x,y point one space at a time in their respective directions and establishes the reference point to the new locati}on. It's a good practice to establish a reference point before any operation.Pressing the firebutton will plot and establi}sh the current x,y as the reference point.DRAWTO: Press D, to drawto the current x,y from the previous reference point. Th}e endpoint of the drawto then becomes the new reference point.BOX: Establish a top left corner of the box with the referenc}e point. Then move the cursor to the bottom righthand corner of the box and press B. This draws an outlined box.FILLED BO}X: Same procedure as BOX except press F. This draws a solid box.GRADUATED FILL BOX: Same procedure as BOX except press G. }Then follow the instructions on the screen.PAINT: Press P, to fill the area enclosing the cursor. CAUTION!!!! Due to the n}ature of this Gr.9 fill, never fill an area with black (R0,G0,B0) that has not first been outlined with black or you will lik}ely erase more than you planned. More on this later.CIRCLE: Establish a reference point as center of circle, move cursor h}orizontally to the outermost edge of the circle and press C to plot the circle.SOLID CIRCLE: Same as circle except press S }to plot a solid circle.ZPHERE : Same as circle except press Z and follow the screen instructions.TEXT: Establish a refere}nce point as the beginning (top left) of the text you wish to enter and press T. Then follow the prompt to type in your text} pressing return when through. The maximum length word when the cursor is all the way to the left is ten letters, so make th}e necessary adjustments for word length wherever you are on the screen. (Hint: Subtract the established x-position from 80 a}nd divide the result by 8 to get the number of letters in your word that will actually show up on the screen.)INCREASE COLO}R by one: Press Ctrl-R, Ctrl-G, or Ctrl-B to raise the respective R,G,or B color by one.DECREASE COLOR by one: Press Ctrl-E}, Ctrl-F, or Ctrl-V to lower the respective R,G, or B color by one. (Think E,F, and V preceed R,G, and B by one.)SELECT BL}ACK: Press 0 (zero). This is good for erasing color. Always remember to first outline the area in black that you want erase}d! Otherwise, when you paint the area it may delete more than you planned.JOYSTICK MOVEMENTSThere are no diagonal movem}ents --- only horizontal and vertical. Two vertical speeds, pushing up or down moves slowly while pushing diagonally up or d}iagonally down moves faster. The x,y coordinates displayed on the right change as you move but the reference point stays in }memory as you previously established it until changed. Also the fast vertical motion does not update the y coordinate until }you resume slow vertical motion. Trying to move beyond the upper and lower limits of the screen may temporarily disrupt the }x,y display. It probably re-establishes the reference point to the point you ran off. So it's good practice to establish a }reference point before any operation. This is really my first attempt at any kind of useful program so I'm learning about m}emory management, PM graphics, basic, etc. as I go. As I said, it works very well for me, but then I know what to expect bec}ause I wrote it. I think it's error-trapped but you can always press to get back to the RUNTIME.COM part. You can g}et an idea of the pictures you can draw by looking at my NEWRGB.ARC file also on CompuServe. If you have any questions or wo}uld like to send a donation for this program and give me incentive to really learn how to program, send to:James M. Pittman}P.O. D. PotterWelcome &}to COLRVIEW, the advancedcolor display program developed forthe Atari 8-Bit Computer family. With COLRVIEW you can push yo&}uroriginal Atari computer to colordisplays previously unattainable !!The following two new modes ofoperation are possible&}:1) 160H x 192V pixels with 64 colors(based on Gr.15)2) 80H x 192V pixels with 4096 colors(based on Gr.9)Boot your com&}puter from a disk withyour favorite DOS (DOS 2.0, 2.5,MyDOS and SpartaDOS should work).Users of XL/XE computers shouldmak&}e sure to disable their built-inBASIC by pressing OPTION duringpower-up. Make sure you have not leftany handlers installed&} (such as the"R:" handler, if you have been usingan 850 or similar serial device).SpartaDOS users are advised todisable &}the TD (Time/Date) line, KEY,and Verify. Now load COLRVIEW.COM(use the [L] command from DOS 2.0,2.5 or MyDOS; SpartaDOS us&}ers canmerely type COLRVIEW to executeit)...After it loads, adjust the Hue andBrightness controls on your monitoruntil &}the background is a burntorange color. You should now see amenu of commands. The commandsavailable from the menu are:[C]&} Continuous show: you will beprompted to enter a directory searchmask ("D:*.R" for start). All filesthat match this mask w&}ill be shown inthe same order they would be listedby a directory read. Each will beshown for 12.8 seconds, and theentire &}show (up to 64 files) willrepeat itself indefinitely. To pause on a particular picture, press [OPTION]. Press [OPTION] agai&}nto go to the next picture. Press[SELECT] to toggle the display listbetween Gr.9 and Gr.15 (more on thislater). Press [S&}TART] to end the showand return to the menu screen.[D] View disk directory: you will beprompted to enter the directoryse&}arch mask. Enter something like"D:*.R" to see the names of theCOLRVIEW files.[G] Load three graphics 15 files, that are d&}isplayed in 160 x 192resolution in 64 colors.[L] Load three graphics 9 files, which are displayed in 80 x 192resolution i&}n 4096 colors. Note: ifyou have found you have used thewrong command to load 3 graphicsfiles (an L rather than a G, maybe)&},press the [SELECT] button whileviewing the picture to swap graphicsmodes.[R] Restore color registers. See howto use th&}is below, under "COLORTUNING".[S] Save color registers. See how touse this below, under "COLOR TUNING".[V] View the cur&}rent picture. Usethis to return to the picture fromthe menu screen.[Z] Exit to DOS. You will be queriedbefore you can ex&}it.[@] Display shareware notice. Just afriendly reminder about registeringthis program :-).[!] Unstick XF551. This send&}s thenescessary commands on the serial busto return an XF551 to double densitymode after it is "stuck" in singledensity m&}ode. If you happen to get stuck after anaccidental keypress (for example, accidentally pressing [L], andneeding to escape &}from the "Enterfilename" prompt), just press theBREAK key. Also note that wheneveryou are asked to enter a filename, you m&}ay enter "D:filename.ext" orjust "filename.ext" if that file islocated on your default disk.Subdirectories are supported &}if youare using MyDOS or SpartaDOS. Thetotal filename length is limited tono more than 32 characters. If themenu has scro&}lled off the top of thescreen, just press RETURN to get itback.COLOR TUNING:-------------COLRVIEW has the ability to t&}une thecolors you see without having toadjust your monitor's hue control. When you load COLRVIEW, it searchesthe default d&}isk for the fileCLRVREGS.DAT. This contains thedefault setting of the three colorsfor the tri-color display. I have setth&}ese to best match my monitor; yoursmay differ...To set yours, do the following: afteryou have loaded an appropriatepictu&}re, press [H] (while the pictureis showing). This will cycle youthrough the available colors, onestep forward each time yo&}u press [H].Press [SHIFT][H] to step backwardsthrough color selections. If you findyou are still unable to get theproper &}colors, press [R], [G], or [B]to adjust the red, green, or blueseparately. Pressing [SHIFT] andeither [R], [G], or [B] wi&}ll reversethe direction of the color change. When you are happy with your colorsettings, press [START] to return tothe me&}nu. Now press [S] to save thesecolor registers to the disk (be surethe proper disk is inserted in yourdefault drive). If y&}ou have becomehopelessly lost while adjustingcolors, you can type [R] (from themenu) to reload the color registersfrom th&}e disk. This operation doesnot report failure to find the diskfile, so be sure the right disk isinserted...I have found &}that graphics 9 filesand graphics 15 files each lookbetter with different settings. Youcan of course use different picture&}sto set the colors. With graphics 15files I have found it best to try tobalance good flesh tones with pureblues. The fles&}h tones can sometimesbe too pink, and the blues can tendto be too purple if you're just alittle off.ABOUT COLRVIEW:----&}-----------I discovered this technique whileplaying with changing colors withdisplay lists. It consists ofalternating li&}nes of red, green, andblue images (displayed in graphics 9or 15). This is in addition to apage-flipping VBI which relocate&}s thestarting color in each of the threeimages. It's really hard to explainin words, and it's full of VBIs andDLIs. I fou&}nd this to be lessannoying than merely page-flippingbetween a red, green, and a blueimage. There will be rather significa&}nt"swimming" in areas of the image withpure (primary) colors. I can claimthis displays 4096 colors (16 x 16 x16), if I re&}ly on the persistence ofvision present in the human eye.COLRVIEW also displays graphics 15(once called 7.5) screens in the&} samemanner (4 x 4 x 4) with a resolutionof 160 x 192.I have also written a program todecode GIF (Graphics InterchangeF&}ormat) pictures to Gr.9 or Gr.15mode three-color files. This programis called APACVIEW, and is availableeither directly fr&}om me, or can bedownloaded from both GEnie andCompuServe. Make sure to get Version2.2 or later for compatibility withthis&} program. If you have a modem, you can downloadadditional COLRVIEW pictures fromGEnie and CompuServe, and from thefollowi&}ng BBS:Computer World BBS: (716)247-835524 hours, 3/12/2400 baud, Rochester,NY, Sysop Bob PuffIf you like this program,&} be sure tolook for the following graphicsprograms:APACVIEW: The GIF decoder/viewerprogram mentioned above. Displays GIF&}pictures in 256 color APAC mode, orconverts them to 64 or 4096 colorCOLRVIEW files. Look for Version 2.4(new).ILBMREAD:&} Decoder/viewer for AmigaIFF picture files. Converts them to256 color APAC mode for viewing andsaving. Look for Version 2.&}1.DEGASRD: Decoder/viewer for Atari STDegas picture files. Displays allDegas modes directly in COLRVIEW ormonochrome. L&}ook for Version 1.1 .APACSHOW Slide show program for APACmode pictures created with eitherAPACVIEW or ILBMREAD. Look for&}Version 2.3.GIFNCODE: Encodes your Micro-Painter,Micro Illustrator (Koala or AtariTouch Tablet), or Gr.8 picture filesi&}nto GIF for viewing on othercomputers or uploading to othercomputer Bulletin Board Systems.COLRVIEW is a shareware produc&}t. Ifyou use and enjoy this program, please express your satisfaction witha letter and the $8.50 registrationfee (registra&}tion through CompuServeShareware Registration (GO SWREG) orvia a GEnie Gift of Time are bothencouraged). In return you wil&}lreceive an autographed, registeredcopy of the most recent version, withprinted documentation.I can also arrange to noti&}fy you (viaelectronic mail or otherwise) when anew version of this program isavailable. Registered owners canreceive the &}next version for anominal fee to cover materials andpostage. Registering also encouragesme to create enhancements to this&}program, and to create other Atari8-Bit software. It would also help pay some of mybills on the pay services, providingsu&}pport and seeking feedback. If youhaven't noticed, the market for Atari8-Bit software has diminished such, that large comme&}rcial software housescannot justify producing newreleases. So I encourage all 8-Bitusers of shareware to register andsupp&}ort the remaining small softwaredevelopers.Your comments are welcome on thisprogram.
