Youmay assign the incomming data fromyour music files to these channel}s in any way, as long as they are thecorrect size (cant play an 8-bitvoice on a 16-bit voice etc.). Thisis done at the b}eginning of the GUMBY.BAS file. Any existing PokeyPlayer files (.V extensions) shouldwork with this upgrade and player.}This is not meant to be a full-featured player, but more a demoto show what can be done. I amworking on a full-featured e}ditor/midi interface/player, but due toother projects also going on....it will not be done tommorrow. There are four file}s in the archive that this DOC file was in:GUMBY.TXT this fileAUTO.SYS a DOS 2.x autorunGUMBY.COM VBI pl}ayer GUMBY.BAS User InterfaceIf you are using a DOS whichsupports an AUTORUN.SYS file, then just copy the AUTORUN.S}YS,GUMBY.DOC, and GUMBY.BAS filesto you player diskette. TheVBI and BASIC files will auto-matically be loaded when youb}oot from this diskette. (BASICmust be enabled). If you cannot or do not wantto use an AUTORUN.SYS file thencopy everythin}g BUT the AUTORUN.SYSfile to your player disk. You mustload the GUMBY.COM file before youenter BASIC, and then RUN the GU}MBY.BAS file.If you are using SpartaDOS-X thencopy the same files as for DOS 2.xabove, but enter the following line fro}m the CLI:BASIC /N AUTORUN.SYS In any case, you must have a48k or 64k machine to use thisversion of GUMBY Playe}r.I reorganized the BASIC playerand removed much of what I thoughtwas not needed. One c@}an simply use versionone to listen to AMS tunes in mono / stereo and Chuck Steinman's patched Pokey Player program to listA}en to *.Vfiles in mono / stereo...Maybe this is the reason why versionone of the (AMS) Music Player can befound quite ofB}ten, while version two is almost impossible to find in PDlibraries or archives...(AMS) Music Player can befound quite ofU ----------------------- The AMS Music Player: ------------------------ by Dan Knauf 7/3/90Introduction:--D}-----------The AMS Music Player will play eitherAMS I or AMS II music. It willdisplay up to 69 music files on yourscreeE}n. You can tag/untag files, playtagged files, autoplay all files, orplay any individual song. The Music Player is primarilF}y for8-bit Atari computers which have hada second Pokey chip installed, butwill work with any Atari 8-bitcomputer. It wilG}l play AMS music ineither 16-bit stereo or 8-bit stereoon computers that have a second Pokeyinstalled. For people without H}thesecond Pokey chip the program willplay 8-bit mono music.I would like to take this opportunityto thank Chuck Steinman I}of Dataquefor releasing the Pokey (Gumby)upgrade on GEnie. I have had some funwith this upgrade. Thanks, Chuck.Using TJ}he Music Player:-----------------------To use The Music Player, 'L'oadPLAY.COM from DOS. When the programhas finisK}hed loading, you will seethe main screen. The top line is thetitle line. If you have two pokeysinstalled there will be a 'L}16' in thecenter of this line. This is toindicate that two Pokey chips havebeen found and music will be playedin 16-bit sM}tereo. If you have onlyone Pokey in your computer you willsee '8M' (for 8-bit mono) instead. To load a directory of musicN} files, press the number of the drive you want to load from. ALL MUSIC FILESMUST BE LOCKED. This program looksfor locked O}files and assumes thatthey are music files so unlock anyfiles on your music disk that are notmusic files. When you press P}thedrive number, the directory of up to69 music files will be read and shownon the screen.Use the arrow keys (without thQ}econtrol key) to move the cursor bararound the directory screen. To playa single song, move the cursor bar tothe song yoR}u want and press RETURN. To autoplay all songs, press the 'A'key. Autoplay begins playing withthe song the cursor is locaS}ted on andplays all songs to the end of thedirectory list. You can 'T'ag filesby pressing the T key, 'U'ntag bypressing T}U. Pressing the 'P' keyplays the songs you have 'T'agged.Change the screen colors by pressingthe '>' and '<' keys. The EU}SCAPE keyreturns you to DOS.The Piano Screen:-----------------While a song is playing, pressingESCAPE stops the musicV} and returns tothe directory screen. This abortseither 'A'utoplay or 'P'lay. Press the SPACEBAR to stop the music andplaW}y the next tagged song or the nextsong in the directory if you are inautoplay. The mode the song is being played inis disX}played immediately after'MUSIC PLAYER'. You can changebetween 16, 8S, and 8M by pressingthe 'M' key. To change the tempoY}, press '*', '/', '+', or '-'. '*' and'/' speed up and slow down thetempo in larger increments while '+'and '-' are fZ}or fine tuning. You can switch between AMS I and AMSII style of playing by pressing the'1' for AMS I and '2' for AMS II. [}Noindication of this switch is given onthe screen. The two versions of AMSuse different math routines to setthe tempo. AM\}S II used a slight envelope on the end of the each noteswhich separates the notes a littlebetter for some songs. If the fi]}lebeing played is an AMS II file theonly change when you play it AMS Istyle will be in the ending of thenotes. Pressing '^}1' or '2' alsorestores the tempo to the originalvalue. The name of the song being played isdisplayed just above the piano_}keyboard.Notes:------The AMS music programs use distortionto create the bass notes of the twolowest available octave`}s. This isnot necessary to play these notes in16-bit mode. Most music sounds bestin 16-bit stereo mode but there aresome a}songs that take advantage of theway the AMS players distorted bassnotes and these sound better to me in8-bit stereo. BILLIb}E JEAN is oneexample. Also, some volume (not much)is lost on the bass notes in 16-bitmode. The tones seem to be richer thc}ough and the notes are more accurate. The Music Player loads at $2000 so itshould work with most DOS's. It waswritten on d}a system using SDX. Whenrun under SpartaDOS 3.2 or earlier, the screen is turned off during alldisk accesses. This is due e}to Sparta's inability to handle the I/Owhen interrupts are enabled. Thescreen is restored as soon as theprogram is done af}ccessing the disk. The Music Player is a freebie. Iwould appreciate any comments orsuggestions you may have. My mailaddreg}ss on GEnie is DAN.KNAUF. Ihope to add the ability to play PokeyPlayer Music to this program. Ihave had it playing some h}Pokey Playermusic but can't seem to get the 3rdvoice to work accurately. Sometimesit plays an octave off. When some ofmi}y hair grows back, I may give itanother try. Meanwhile, I hope youenjoy using the Music Player. Danoff. When some ofmi
