The Atari ST line of computers were some of the most popular computers that Atari released. They were very cheap and very powerfull and had made Atari a lot of money back in the mid and late eighties. They were first introduced at the CES. The prototype 130ST and 520ST were on display. The ST runs on a graphical GUI called GEM which easilly made DOS look quite obsolete. This GUI was not exactly as easy to use as the Macintosh GUI but was so close that people jokingly called the ST a Jackintosh after Atari's CEO Jack Tramiel. The OS was TOS (being the Tramiel Operating System, later to be seriously called "The Operating System" The 130ST and later the 260ST were never released but the 520 with 512kb of RAM and later the very powerfull 1040ST with 1024kb of RAM being the cheapest, Stock computer with over 1mb of RAM!
With IBM and Commodore trailing behind the ST (being the best buy for a computer under $1000) Atari was able to become a serious competitor in the Computer market.
Not only that, but these were the first 16 bit computers available to the consumer which full out beat the IBM PC and the APPLE MACINTOSH!
=The ACD currently
focuses on these type of computers.=
And we do not cover
computers that were not for public marketing or that were only prototypes.
Hello, I am really sorry about this of all sections having almost nothing in it. I am currently looking for some freeware that I can make a wonderfull site from and once Ive got that, the ST section will clearly become the best section out of it all!
