E-Jag Day 2k1

Words: Mad Butscher
Pictures: Lars Hannig

The E-Jag Day (EJD) took place on the 16th and 17th of November in Coesfeld, Germany. Mr XY of Foundation Two, Sage and I visited the event on the 16th.

Traditionally, Mr XY leaves his home in Kaiserslautern (K-Town) the Friday before an event takes place. He always watches Dragon Ball Z on TV, so he leaves to arrive in Wiesbaden just before Dragon Ball Z is broadcast. So after we watched the further adventures of Son Goku, we went into a pub. When we returned, Mr XY had the idea to visit another pub, because it has a funny name, "Bei Gita" (at Gita). Maybe you recognize that 8-bit language is spoken here, so to understand you must know that one of the graphic chips inside an XL/XE is called GTIA, but everybody calls it GITA. I decided not to join him and used the real GTIA in the meantime, but  Mr XY said he had a lot of fun with GITA.

After Mr XY's return we did some gaming, and at 3 o'clock on Saturday morning we decided that sleeping some three hours was a good idea. After we woke up, at 7 o'clock we left to pick up Sage in Giessen, which is a one hour drive away from Wiesbaden. There, Sage tried to be angry that we arrived an hour late, but because his girlfriend smiled all the time, I think the hour wasn't wasted for him :-)

After a short stop at a Burger King, we finally arrived at a quarter past eleven in Coesfeld. Unfortunately the road map did not tell how narrow the roads are, we ended up in the city and had to take some biker roads to come out. This reminded me that we are close to Holland.

So half an hour later we finally arrived at the location, which was a pub run by a Catholic organisation (Kolping). Playing Doom under the sign of the cross is real fun.

Sijmen Schouten Checkered Flag posterThe organisers (Starcat and DVD) and some other people were already there. They played some games on the Jaguar, and had a look at the projects Starcat is developing. Sage built up a Lynx network to show his Lynx network routines. Mr XY and I built up a Jaguar and an XE Game System for the gaming competitions. Mr XY also showed his copy of Star (something) 2000, a prototype game he just bought. Later Michael Neihs appeared, who promotes Nuon in Germany. He gave us some new info about an upcoming machine, that a new Nuon chip (version 3) is ready and also showed his big Jaguar collection.

On Saturday there were 18 visitors at the event. Beside the Germans, there were about seven people from Holland. Of course the crazy MNX guys (Fox, TXG) were present. Sijmen and Sandra Schouten got married this day, but they also came! They sold a lot of Lynx hardware and games and some Jaguar games, so I could make my little collection a bit more complete. From near Amsterdam Getjan and Robert came. Robert had an interesting Jaguar, because he modified it to run 16 different operating systems (What?! - Ed). So far he includes five different ones.

Now it was time to start the gaming competitions. First we played Super Burnout on a Jaguar. Here are the results:

  1. Michael Neihs
  2. Mad Butscher (Foundation Two)
  3. Mr XY (Foundation Two)

Mr XY and I trained in this game two weeks ago, but Michael seems to do nothing else than playing Jaguar. In the final I came off the bike in the same corner in every round, it really was a shame for a finalist.

The next competition was Checkered Flag on the Lynx. At the Unconventional 2k1 we had the problem that some Lynxes didn't work, so we only connected four of them. So this time it was the first time we had a six-Lynx network running, so it took only three rounds to find a winner. After the normal network problems (six machines, six administrators) it was real fun for all. In the final, I started extremely bad, the others were already half a lap in front of me, but after I concentrated a little, I reached fifth position and saw two others in front of me half a lap before the finish. I knew that I could only overtake one of them, so I bumped in from behind, got in front of him and got the 4th place.

  3. Sijmen Schouten

Now it was time to eat a little bit. While we were eating in the pub, we had a look at the glorious German football team playing against the Ukraine (1:1).

After that we had the last competition: Joust on an XE Game System. We had this competition some weeks ago at the ABBUC JHV, so most people knew what to do.

The results

  1. Mr XY (Foundation Two)
  2. Robert Demming
  3. Sage

I failed in the first round, so I had some time to speak with the mother of one of the visitors. Talking with her was very interesting, because she was someone from outside the Atari world and had a different view of it than the rest. She was also very busy painting the certificates for the winners of the gaming competitions by hand. So many thanks to her for her great work.

The overall champion of the day was once again Mr XY. Foundation Two won four of nine certificates, so we redeemed our bad result at the ABBUC JHV.

After the competitions we continued gaming and talking until half past 11. Then we went home. We had a relaxed day full of fun. I met a lot of cool Atari people and I'm looking forward to the EJD 2k2.

On our way home, we wanted to take a stop at the gas station, but we missed the open ones in Coesfeld, so we had to go to a neighbor town (Duelmen). There we were just standing at the gas station, when three police cars came into the station. The policemen jumped out, pulled out their guns and arrested two guys in the car. This really looked very dangerous, and we thought that these two guys were dangerous gangsters, but the police found nothing in the car, so it was a only a countryside theater.
